Grandma would win, duh. Anyway. I honeslty feel its one of the best written early HxH episodes , especially how character focused it was . Its a bit underrated I feel in most people eyes , or just its not as popular and well received as other episodes in the entire show . I think showing first half is kinda like showing normalcy for Killua , like saying grace before eating and just showing how at easy Killua is when watching Gon interact with his family . Its a really nice touch considering context of Killuas upringing . And then the fireplace scen. I think its was kinda cry for help and internalizing Killuas mindset out loud. The way he said it that he dont have anything he wants , i thought it showed him actually being sad and afraid of having no purpose compared to Gon. It was also sorrta reaffirmation for him if Gon wants to hang out with him more , thats why i thought it was a cry for help, even if its not an obvious one . As for Gon, I think hes just very straightforward and how he talked with Killua i just thought show wanted to show how earnest and serious he is about hanging out with Killua . But I can see , how his words dont match with tone of his voice , lol. The second half about his dad and how he just fuckin left Gon , And just what kind of person he was . Its interesting cause it paints way different picture compared to what hunter examiner was talking about. And the last few min, I thought it was a really well done reveal of fathers voice and tone and fantastic well earned cliffhanger . And the ED music fit really well, as in theres a new adventure coming , lol. Overall I really this episode , it was well directed and written, and it show our characters mental states a bit and just general more characterization and future stuff .

Grandma might win. It’s anime so usually the old folks are always op.

So much to enjoy about this episode. Love Killua’s sort of wide-eyed introduction to normal family stuff and that we get to see more of his uncertainty. He’s still working out what his place is in the world besides a Zoldyck and Gon’s friend, deciding what he stands for. Love that Gon gets to be a little more introspective and there’s genuine family affection between him and Mito. I think that helps set him apart from Ging, who left the island and never looked back except to ditch his son. This episode is one I like a lot because it just could never happen within the genre expectations of mainstream shonen. It sets the stage really well for a lot or character tension and development down the road. Definitely a fun cliffhanger, too. :)

Seeing a lot of votes for Grandma lol. Duly noted. I think we'd agree re: the writing on this one. Was really nice to switch to a mostly character-based episode, going back home and reconnecting, showing Killua a different version of family & community, just the overall aura the island has. Different kind of episode, but very much a highlights, I thought. That's a good point re: Killua. He seems very primed to keep his cool and observe in most situations (that don't involve mysterious nen lol) and I like your subsequent read on the fireplace scene in light of that. Getting a glimpse into Killua's more personal anxieties. Felt like another nice seed or window to his journey-to-come as a character -- and I imagine you're right re: Gon lol. Probably just the tone of voice, because his sentiments seemed pretty genuine. Gon, generally, seems pretty straight forward. Great point as well re: the portrayal of Gon's dad. Especially in the way it contradicts from other accounts we've received from certain Hunter characters. This debate will continue into the next ep lol. Gon's dad is a fascinating figure..and perhaps a bit of a dick? But really dug the puzzle at the end with the nen box, the tape, the cliffhanger. Caps off a great character/tonal episode with that rush of adventure, like you said. Definitely hope to see more like this one sprinkled in as we go!

2021-07-15 04:50:46 Seriously! Just in terms of aura & tone, alone - really enjoyed spending time back on the island and getting some further windows into the characters. Love the idea of Killua honing in on finding his own place and purpose in the world & excited to see how it informs his arc. I'm really glad we got to reconnect with Mito & grandma in this ep. Seems like 1 way in which Gon is already different from his dad, he might actually care to keep his family ties there haha. Ging doesn't look like the greatest guy, but I think it's an intriguing way to continue the mystery. I've heard a lot about how this show's sort of got its own pace/style/rhythm when it comes to storytelling and this ep did feel different from, I think, a lot of the other shows we've seen. For the most part this felt like a full-on, kinda tender character ep. Very much appreciated that & it makes for a real nice swell again when the cliffhanger with the tape comes around. New one just went up - hope you enjoy!!!
