I'm with you that there is a lot to appreciate about this series. They get so much right with the narrative and the visuals that I can throw myself completely into the experience. This is the first episode where the show's biggest strength begins to show itself. They're really good at taking horror and turning it into something emotional and beautiful. I feel so bad for Shirley in this episode. When she gets the news that Nell died she immediately wants to break down. Every scene we see with her after that she looks like she wants to break down, but she holds it together because she's used to holding everything together. Her helping Luke in the flashback was another example of this, but her interaction with him at the wedding tells us that even she has her limits. The context as to why she feels she needs to do the funeral for Nell is well realized. I can't imagine how taxing it is to have to stare at your dead sibling for hours. After all of that she honestly needed to cry lol

Exactly! Really feels like all the horror is intimately tied to these characters & their experiences. Like.. even if Hill House is inhabited by its own malevolent spirits, it clearly turns into something much more personal when it claims Olivia.. however that came to pass. And god haha, that's a good call. Shirley does seem like she could do with a prolonged and proper cry. In some ways I feel like the autopsy was her stand-in for that - seeing the stark truth, but in her own way, being able to "fix" her... It is pretty fascinating that so much of the episode involves her just trying to keep it together under various circumstances. Especially when she gets the initial call and is clearly on the verge of tears, fighting them back. Think she's definitely got some PTSD from the past as well, so before the season's out I guess I'm sort of anticipating at least one proper Shirley breakdown lol. Just because she's clearly had a whoooole lot to process across her life (..not to mention whatever might come of that thing with her hubby and the checkbook). Perhaps I'll go have a cry on her behalf lol. Hopefully recording the next one sometime here over the next couple days!

Ditto to what’s already been mentioned! The only thing I can add is that I think Shirley, being the second oldest and female, probably had to take on a mother type figure with the younger kids. Even though they ended up living with their Aunt, I’m sure she felt the responsibility and is why she is all take charge, always trying to keep things in control. Great reaction!!! Just love how you are getting this show!!! Everything you said was on point man! Can’t wait for ep 3

Ahhh, that would make a good amount of sense. I'm still learning to keep straight the order of the kids' ages 😅 but especially with Shirley being the oldest, it does seem like she'd have been kinda thrust into that position. Especially after going to live with their aunt and all that. REALLY glad you're enjoying the reactions, man! Each one of these really does feel like a rich little movie. And glad I'm not too off-base with the subtext and all that 😅Ep. 3 will be up shortly!!!

The scene with luke at the wedding always breaks my heart.

Oof, seriously!! Some great acting in that scene - you really get a sense for the history between them. Really looking forward to Luke's eventual (I assume) solo episode!!

Yeah haha. I really love how this show deals with the emotions involved with a disfunctional family. As well as the grief of losing a loved one.
