That was a really dope video. It was refreshing to see a hip-hop music video about giving back to the people instead of the typical cliches we often see. Great vid John!

Thank you for your reaction John! It was great watching this music video for the first time along with you! It made me really emotional. I love how it inverts all the trappings of hip hop videos. They’re typically so self-centred, arrogant, hedonistic, materialistic, and degrading to women. They glamourize an artificial rich lifestyle and normalize exaggerated bravado and disdain for others as if it’s something to admire. I love how here Drake is secondary; he’s merely a vehicle for other people’s happiness, the same people - his fans - who bolster his career and allow him to perpetuate that wealthy, perfect myth in mainstream media. I love that it starts with a narration of sorts by a man who ain’t got nothing but he looks good, and it’s a good life - it’s such a poignant way to set the tone of the video and convey that so much of looking good is feeling good, and if you feel good, happy, see the beauty and possibility of life, whether you’re lounging in a mansion or making exclamations on a dilapidated street, it’s a good life. I agree about the juxtaposition between the Saks Fifth Avenue and life beyond it too! These expensive, higher class places are so often shown as places to be revered, the ideal, but here it’s austerely pristine, spacious, empty, and cold in contrast to ordinary life outside where there’s a paroxysm of colour, character, movement, and, as you say, life, spirit and magic. The slightly silly dance they do inside seems to further desecrate the classy aura of the store. I just love how it celebrates and elevates simplicity, the real lived experiences of people. I love when it focuses on people’s candid expressions, unembellished by makeup and fancy clothes or accessories, and emphasizes the merit of regular people striving to survive, to make a living, to take care of their families, to cope with their disability, to succeed in school, and to save lives as public safety servants, as if they are the stars and heroes deserving of attention, because they are. It was heartwarming to see you were affected at various points by the kindness and humanity of it all too! I feel like the label must’ve known of Drake’s plan beforehand haha. You’re right that it really inspires you to donate to charity and use whatever platform you have for social good. Thank you again for reacting and sharing your thoughts!

Right? Was a real pleasant surprise and felt pretty authentic, generally speaking. Drake seems like the guy who can do that haha. Glad you dug it! :)

Aw, no problem! Thank YOU for such a thoughtful analysis. :) I love when subversion or deconstruction comes in a simple package. We know the well-worn correlation between the concepts of popular hip hop and wealth - I feel like I've come to understand a bit better why those two ideas coming together are such a big deal - but it's really cool to see that flipped around in a way that, as you said, changes the focus and puts that trademark wealth toward the people just out there getting by. And showing that while money can help a whole lot and make a huge difference, life and people, feeling good and grateful are key. And there's something about Drake where it just seems to sorta make sense it'd be him doing this... at least to me, anyway haha. And I liked as well that, even though it is his video for his song, the video, itself, really puts the spotlight on the people. There are certainly ways in which this could've come across the wrong way and I think they avoided those nicely here. And too, just that idea that no matter what level you're on, there's a quality of life to be tapped into. Nice to leave a video like this feeling the sense of community and humanity after it all. And y'know.. a pretty groovy tune haha. Really glad you enjoyed the video & thanks again for sharing your thoughts as well! :))
