you root for Lindy the whole episode since it is from her POV. The whole slug monster mystery kept me invested. You might turn on her after what she does to Ricky. Then the twist at the end and things throughout the episode start to seem different. How everyone besides the doc is white. How Lindy blocks the doc immediately but doesn't do it to Ruby. How Lindy reacts with surprise when she finds out the doc and Ruby are in the same room. The things Lindy says about/to the doctor: "I hate you. I hate you. I hate you," "Guys I know this is wrong and when this is over he is going to be so disciplined --I can't wait, but just give him a shot, okay, I think he's not as stupid as he looks" Even Ricky has this weird look on his face when the doc explains the number input pad to him, occasionally looking away like he is trying to dismiss the doc. Ill be honest this seemed like a typical 'dangers of social media and influencer culture' episode that the ending really worked on me. I was so oblivious but after watching a second time it could not be more obvious. Ncuti's reaction at the end was perfect. This continues to be a great season.

I resubscribed to catch up with your Doctor Who reactions because I wanted to see you react to this episode. RTD says "73 Yards" is the best thing he's written but imo, this was the best thing he's written since Midnight. I'm not even sure he realises how clever it is. I noticed the suspiciously all-white casting early but thought it may have been a mistake on the studio's casting part, as they're usually really good at inclusive casting. The sequence from the betrayal to the ending is brilliant. It's metatextual in the best way, and there's so many little clues on rewatch: Lindy blocks the Doctor but listens to Ruby, Ruby has to vouch for the Doctor, Lindy says "he's not as stupid as he looks", she gets him confused with another Black person she saw, the security system blocks him from entering the city, she's surprised that Ruby + Doctor are in the same room (even though the twin characters are). Probably lots more stuff I missed too. I think it's really interesting to contrast this ep with something like Rosa from 13's run where the politics of the ep were so exposition-y and on the nose... I genuinely think this ep will make a lot of people realise they too are in 'the bubble' and didn't notice the all-white casting or weird racist undertones. To quote someone on Reddit: "Black Doctor Who fans have had to live with 'just walk in like you own the place' for 6 decades, and for the first time the Doctor has to reconcile what it's like to try to save people who don't want him to save them based on the color of his skin". To quote RTD from the behind the scenes "The moment we cast Ncuti everyone said to me 'oh what's it going to be like when he goes into the past, because a Black Doctor is going to face racism'... and you sit there going, what about now? Why do you think racism is only in the past, when you look at what's happening to the world?" I think that's an incredibly insightful sentiment. Worth noting Ruby grew up with a Black mother too, as someone who grew up in a mixed family the way she comforts the Doctor while giving him space to process is very relatable.

It was quite beautiful. As a white man myself, I was caught off guard with my own white privilege as I watched - not picking up on much until the end..then I went back and was like...damn! Ncuti's first scene filmed! Now I can't wait to talk about it with everyone! I just have to wait til Tuesday since that's when I record my Doctor Who podcast! -PLD

I haven't heard anyone mention this yet but watching it back I really think that The Doctor and Ruby KNEW that the society was racist and made the decision to help them anyway because... well, the doctor. But they hoped that saving them would earn enough goodwill that they could help them escape... and when they didn't despite everything that's why he was so frustrated... if any other version of the doctor had come he'd have saved them... :-/
