Reading Notes

These are things referenced in the podcast, sometimes even in passing. They are tangents you can go down, articles, videos, reference that we find interesting and lead to our discussion. They are the raw material behind some of our thoughts.

Introduction

we talk about our Muay Thai Bones Newsletter, filled with the stories, news and influences that feed our MTB brains, and make The Bones possible. You can read and subscribe to that for free here.

I also mention the podcast Maintanance Phase as a favorite of mine right now, find that here:

1. MEGA SUBJECT: Female Sexuality & The Gym (8:00)

my article, the hidden ways gender becomes problematic in a traditional Thai gym setting: The Mitt and the Joke: Illusions and Pitfalls of Equality in a Muay Thai Gym

my reading notes on a seminal study of Thai Tom and Dee relationships that Thai female fighters sometimes are in: Reading Notes “Toms and Dees” by Megan Sinnott – Part 1 (2013)

my article on the risk of female sexuality in a Thai gym, as I was thinking about the topic in my first few years: Playing to Type – the Sexy Exchange Student and Muay Thai (2014)

Kevin and I talk about the concept of habitus which helps explain how spaces and situations shape you as a person, conditioning your behavior. Kevin takes a deep dive into habitus in his thread on Bourdieu and Habitus and how it relates to my training, and Thailand's Muay Thai in general:

In the podcast we talk about the experiences of Angie, the first presenting as trans-female fighter in Lumpinee Stadium. I've written a lot about her, and interviewed her several times. You can find that here on my blog.

I mention the film Riders of Justice, a really good film. But what I specifically was thinking about is a scene where single events are explained to be the product of a who network of past events. watch the trailer for the film here

I interviewed the pioneer of the sport, UK Muay Thai Fighter Anne Quinlan back in 2013, who had far less opportunity in Thailand than we do, back in the late 1980s: Interview with Female Muay Thai Pioneer Anne Quinlan - you can also find more about her in this article. In the podcast we talk about how she was brought to tears even watching simple, but serious padwork.

2. The Turtle & The Dragon (52:11)

The story of The Buddha And The Beggar - which contains the parable of the turtle and the dragon

Maria Bamford in Lady Dynamite was the Natural Extravert character we briefly joke about. It's not a great show, but that one character was awesome.

In talking about the Thai concept of Senae, charm, a kind of magnetism that yodmuay exhibit, I reference a great scene in in Hail Caesar, which shows what star power is, and how it can't be just faked. Watch the one minute scene here. The movie actor just cannot get the line.

3. The Kaimuay & The Muay Thai Gym (1:12:04)

My write up on the Phuket Gyms meeting to unify their approach to fighting:

We talked about how changing the rules of a sport so people who don't understand the sport can watch it, something discussed in the Phuket gym meeting, and behind Entertainment Muay Thai changes to the sport. Kevin applied the analogy to chess on Twitter:

read that conversation here

I reference the time I took Andrew Zimmern to Rajadamnern and helped explain the fights to him: What It Was Like Meeting Andrew Zimmern – Driven By Food Bangkok (2016)

4. Leaving A Thai Gym: What's Good For You

Kevin wrote about the difficulties women sometimes encounter when taken on as a serious student by a Thai Kru in Thailand. This plays into our discussion of why sometimes its better to move on from Thai gyms you have been at over several years: Kru Syndrome: The Pitfalls of Being Taken On By a Thai Trainer as a Woman

We also took Kru Syndrome on as a subject in only our 2nd Muay Thai Bones podcast, you can watch that here:

Our reference to the new push-back from gym owners over the movement of sponsored western fighters stems from this post. Read Kevin's write-up here:

The subject in this episode is balanced against how we spoke about it in more depth in episode 25, listen to that here.

Episode 25 also helps spell out differences between the Muay Thai Gym and the Kaimuay.

5. MMA In Lumpinee (1:48:57)

My write up on the Fairtex announcement that they are bringing MMA to Lumpinee Stadium:

We talk about a recent fight by the Thai female fighter formerly named Buakaw, it's at the 48 minute mark of this Muay Hardcore card. She was a very prolific fighter, highly skilled. She used to fight at 51 kg, and hasn't fought in a long while, and fought this fight at 60 kg. She was able to fight a 3 round fight as an arc:

Briefly Kevin and I discuss the very long history of Thailand's Muay Thai and western boxing. Some of that can be found in the Modernization of Muay Thai Timeline

My interview with Itti, a passionate 30 year old Thai MMA fighter back in 2016, watch it here: Insight into Thailand’s MMA Scene – Interview with MMA Fighter Itti Chantrakoon
