SModCast Playlists! (Patreon)

So, here’s a thing that folks have been asking me about for years.

In 2007, Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier launched their podcast, SModcast. I was the original editor of the show, a job which morphed from basic post-production to something that eventually became my own little creative corner of SModcast’s first 124 episodes.

Right from the start, Kevin was keen on the show having a different song open each episode, as well as a music bed throughout - essentially providing some audio atmosphere for the discussion. Kevin chose all of the music for the first episode before turning this task over to Mosier, who would just choose a lot of tracks from his CDs to fill the time. And, speaking of time, eventually Mosier decided that his time was better spent not having to do this weekly task, and as of episode 8, these duties were turned over to me.

And me being me, I chose to make this process both a lot harder and much more time consuming by leaving my own little creative mark on every episode. First, I would choose the song that kicked off the episode, specifically to set a tone for the conversation to come. Then, for the music bed, each track was chosen to comment, or riff, on what was being discussed. But they were mixed in such a way that they fulfilled their primary task - to be atmosphere, not a distraction. So, sharp-eared listeners got a bit of bonus comedy from every episode.

And it carried on this way for over 100 episodes, until it was decided, for various quite good reasons I won’t go into, that we’d standardize the theme song and discontinue the music beds, while also stripping the unique openers and music beds from the already extant episodes in the archive.

But there’s been many a longtime fan of the show who has asked me about the music used in those original versions of the episodes, either so they can identify once-and-for-all almost subliminal half-heard snippets of songs, or to construct playlists of their own based on those music beds.

So, guess what? As an exclusive for my $1+ Patrons, I’ll be releasing the song list for every episode, one per week, until we hit the wall (Episode 124).

There’s a lot of music I love dearly used throughout those episodes, as well as some rarities, and it’ll be fun to finally share the complete playlist info with fans so they can hunt them down and listen to them all... And also so they can stop asking me about it. 😉
