I was a fan of STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE long before it was fashionable. And I truly believe, in the years since its initial run, when it was often viewed unfavorably as an awkward middle child, that the show has finally attained an appreciation as a groundbreaking work of serialized fiction.

Oh, and a damned fine program, filled with exquisitely written and performed characters.

The show is being celebrated in a brand new documentary, WHAT WE LEFT BEHIND, which gathers together the writers, cast, crew, and fans to look back at the show, and also look forward to what a possible future could hold.

On May 13, you can view the film on the big screen at your local movie theater, and it's well worth checking out, as it features footage from the show newly remastered in high definition. If you recall what a revelation it's been to view STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION in full high-def scanned directly from the 35mm negatives, you know just how startling a transformation it is for a show originally mastered on video despite being shot on film.

In conjunction with the theatrical debut of the documentary, I had the chance to chat with some of the show's actors *and* its showrunner.

So, to round out this week of DEEP SPACE NINE episodes, I have an insightful conversation with writer/producer Ira Steven Behr.

Listen as we chat about DEEP SPACE NINE,  temporal beards, origins, disconnects, The Avery Enigma, serialization, catching waves, station engines, Quark's IQ, and spin-offs...
