I knew it was coming eventually, as it does for us all, but the news of Stan Lee's passing still hit me hard.

Certainly he has a complicated legacy, but Stan was a master showman and a magnificent booster for the medium of comics... and his writing left an indelible impression on a kid discovering the thrill of reading, delighting as he joyfully tossed out 50 cent words when everyone else was throwing nickels. 

Comics taught me to read. Is it a visual medium? Of course. But the combination of beautiful images & powerful writing can make a comic sublime. Even when he stumbled, or his stories feel dated, Stan Lee was a writer who dangled brass rings above his readers, daring you to reach. 

I talked to Stan numerous times over the years, and I want to share a few with you...
