Now that you've heard the starting point of this song (shared July 28), today I'm sharing the second draft!

You'll notice the tempo is still chugging along, and the verse lyrics are first draft... but by this point, Ian and I had landed the chorus and the bridge! YAY!

So how did THIS turn into current day 'Never Really Mine'?

I sent this demo to my parents before I began recording the Weightless album. They kept encouraging me to try to include it on the record... but I felt something wasn't quite there yet. Eventually, I decided to play it for producer Bill Reynolds to get his thoughts:

"It's super catchy but I think it'd be better if you re-wrote all the verse lyrics and slowed it down to molasses pace."  I don't know how he heard that! But I loved the idea.

Bill and I were deep into the process of making the record, so I didn't have a lot of editing time if this was going to make the cut. I went home that night, sat down at the piano and re-wrote the verses. When I sent the new lyrics to my co-writer Ian Keaggy, I crossed my fingers that'd he be okay with a totally different approach to this song. Luckily, he was on board!

The next day, I went back into the studio (named the Fleetwood Shack) with Bill and we started laying down the track for what you now hear on Weightless. It definitely had a unique journey but I'm so glad we didn't give up on this song. I love singing it to this day!

Thanks for listening. <3
