THE PURPLE WORM LAIR (Incl. Animated Token) (Patreon)
Content
A creature most foul and fascinating — the Purple Worm.
Picture, if you will, a gargantuan worm, its body stretching an astonishing 80 feet, covered in chitinous plates of the darkest purple. At one end, a maw filled with razor-sharp teeth, and at the other, a poisonous stinger, ready to strike. This, dear friends, is the Purple Worm. Now, you may have heard tales of these creatures burrowing through the earth, devouring all in their path, be it man, beast, or stone. And indeed, these tales are true.
The Purple Worm is a predator like no other, capable of swallowing beings the size of horses whole. As we delve deeper into the abyss, we find that the Purple Worm is not just a mindless beast. When it attacks, it coils its massive body, striking with both head and tail with a speed and precision that belies its size. And while its intelligence may be lacking, its senses are not. The Purple Worm possesses a tremorsense, allowing it to detect every vibration in the ground, every step of its prey. But the Purple Worm is not confined to the underground. Varieties of this creature are known to inhabit lakes and desert plains, each adapted to its unique environment. The Desert Purple Worm, for example, travels in groups, following in the wake of natural phenomena to find its prey. The Mottled Purple Worm, on the other hand, is an aquatic sub-species, found in the muck of shallow waters, surfacing only to hunt.
What many do not know is that these creatures are not just masters of the earth — they are also adept swimmers, navigating the waters with a grace unexpected of such monstrous beings. And what of their biology, you ask? The Purple Worm lays its eggs in clusters, suspended from the walls of its lair by strands of sticky saliva. These eggs, silvery spheres with hard shells, are highly valued by wizards for their arcane properties. And the young, when they hatch, are known as wormlings, already 9 feet long and weighing 1,500 pounds. The Purple Worm plays a vital role in the ecosystem of its habitat, creating tunnels and passages in the Underdark, and leaving behind castings rich in unrefined ores and precious metals. Indeed, some adventurers seek out the Purple Worm not to slay it, but to harvest its valuable castings.
