January 2023 Q&A - Tombstone - Wyatt Earp - The "Old West"

InRange is entirely viewer supported: https://www.patreon.com/inrangetv https://utreon.com/c/inrangetv This month's Q&A is focused on historical topics surrounding specifically Tombstone, AZ, the Old West & the Wyatt Earp - both the truth and the mythology. 00:57 Sean S. Who is the person that is passed off as Holliday in most photos, and what is the history around that? 03:13 orianhullinger Why are the Earps are so prolific in Western lore, and where did it start? 07:47 Max S The bottled in bond act of 1897 was the first food regulation, before that rectifiers put everything from tobacco spit to iodine in whiskey. What was the whiskey of choice for Earp and the west of the time. Brown-Forman produced the first consistently bottled and stamped bourbon of the time. A history of Bourbon is a history of the US (look at the Whiskey Rebellion) so I'm curious how it ties in here. 09:10 Sean S. During the fight at the OK Corral what was the caliber of the shotgun used was it 12ga or 10ga? No info I have seen has said what it was. 11:49 Marlene tangential, feel free to ignore, but what do you think of this "Tombstone" rifle and its advertisement? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKM3HP392MU&feature=youtu.b 15:09 Teddy (More seriously): What is a little detail or tidbit about the gunfight and the parties involved that a lot of pop culture has actually gotten surprisingly right? 17:02 Nick B After the ‘Vendetta Ride’ by some of the Earps and Doc Holliday among others, it is my understanding that they did not and could not return to Tombstone because there were warrants out for their arrest (the movies inevitably gloss over this issue). What ever became of those charges and was Wyatt Earp forced to avoid Arizona or at least Tombstone for the rest of his days? 18:35 Derrill G Were there ever any charges or trials for the attacks on Morgan and Virgil Earp? 21:58 Nick B Sorry to keep peppering you with questions but this topic is such fun (feel free to use any or none, of course). I thought it was mythical but a couple of decades ago I read an article arguing at least somewhat convincingly that Edward Judson aka “Ned Buntline” did gift long barrel Colt’s to Wyatt Earp and a few other lawmen and Earp used his at the OK Corral. What say you? 23:12 Brian J Speaking of fights, what’s your take on the outcome of the Fitzsimmons vs. Sharkey boxing match? 27:58 Matthew J What's the best depiction of the famous fight? How do you judge them?

Great account. Amazing how urban legends become so real.

I really enjoyed this. Would love to see you do more of this kind of thing.

I very much enjoy your forays into winnowing out historical fact from popular legend. I remember as a kid in the fifties seeing ads for a "Matador" 10 gage shotgun although I haven't seen one since. I presume 10 gage fell out of favor with the advent of smokeless powder

Compare and contrast two movies on the same gunfight, both directed by John Sturges: "Gunfight at the OK Corral" (1957) and "Hour of the Gun" (1967).

It wasn't so much smokeless powder (that has been around since before 1900) that did in the 10 gauge; it was the advent of longer magnum 12 gauge shells. A three and a half inch 12 gauge will do almost the same thing a 10 gauge will. The larger bore guns were sold as "goose guns" and were kind of heavy for other types of hunting. They are not obsolete, but have faded in popularity.

Excellent video on the real Wyatt Earp. Water's "The Earp Brothers of Tombstone" was one of the first accurate accounts of the 'Old West' I ever read. I very much enjoy and appreciate this type of content. It's why I started supporting you several years ago. Keep it up!

From one historian to another, your work is spectacular. Carry on!

Wonderful video. I’ve read a little about the Earps and Doc Holliday over the years but it was a pleasure to hear from someone with such an in depth command of the subject. Thank you!

can't dislike any ol'west history. isn't the photo, next to books, in the wikipedia article? no. but in books. do you prefer the 4 3/4", 5 1/2, 7 1/2don't care on colt saa? agreed. the costner is far from tombstone and IMO better. no doubt kilmer was outstanding and, though as different as qauid played doc... he did it just as good.

I prefer the 4 3/4, then 5 1/2 and then the 7 1/2. They're all usable though.
