Releasing this early to Patreons only, and I'm not sure when I should make it public?

Giving each InRange video time to gather views and growth is required due to the algorithm, and I don't like "stepping on" a current video that's garnering views, so I don't know when to publish something smaller like this?

I don't think this justifies a full week release.

Thoughts?

ADDENDUM:
I'm going to link it as an end card fo the current video, unlisted, and then publish it probably Monday more broadly.

Re-Capping a Waterlogged Percussion Revolver

InRange is entirely viewer supported: https://www.patreon.com/inrangetv So what happens when you have a failure to fire and merely re-cap the failed chamber? That's what we discuss in this secondary video.

The release schedule has been very confusing (granted, I don't follow the Discord). It was Tuesdays and Fridays for a bit, then got a little inconsistent. I find two videos a week to be good and predictable (I like predictable because I don't rely on the algorithm to find videos - I prefer to know exactly when creators publish).

There was a significant amount of discussion in the comments about recapping and sealing with beeswax, so maybe as soon as you can algorithm allowing

Anonymous

This isn't wholly relevant, but who manufactured your replicas in the last vid?

Anonymous

You should release it soon. There where lots of comments about this, people would probably like it resolved, mabye also pin a comment on the first video?

Anonymous

Forget the algorithm, send it!

orianhullinger

Maybe Fri or Saturday, mid-release

InRangeTV

Releasing it soon with ruin the already shadowbanned view numbers on the bigger effort video.

Kevin Snyder

I haven't had the chance to watch your last few videos yet so maybe you covered this but did you ever come to a decision about monetizing the channel?

Anonymous

Personally I prefer that an addendum be made available quickly so I’m not discovering additional information possibly weeks later. I understand the algorithm has been suppressing content, so would it make that much of a difference to views since it seems like only the core audience is seeing things recently anyway?

Anonymous

Release it on Saturday or Sunday. That gives several days for the main video to get its traction and also might drive more viewers to it who missed the first one. A mini mid cycle release.

Anonymous

I'm no expert on the algorithm, but perhaps release it after some video that underperforms?

InRangeTV

I'm going to link it as an endcard fo the current video, unlisted, and then publish it probably Monday more broadly.

You could just add a pinned comment telling people to look for the second video on patron. Mabye some new people would sign up?

Anonymous

That makes sense. Thanks for putting out great informative content!

It's not material for a full week release, but it is an interesting follow-up, so I'd vote for weekend release. One question--IIRC original percussion caps would have had mercury fulminate as the igniting compound. Would it also fail to ignite when wet? I think the answer is "yes," but it would close the loop on an obvious question.

InRangeTV

From what I've been able to ascertain per minimal historical records, yes, it does fail the same way.

Anonymous

Thanks. That thought occurred to me as well, but figured you'd need to punch the nipple-holes clear with a paperclip or something. And that didn't seem particularly safe against a loaded cylinder. Wet or not.

K. D. Campbell

This was what I was thinking with rain and an 1860 Army. Typically if I had a failure like that I’d try it again, but then if it didn’t go I’d re-cap before calling it “dead”.

Does releasing it at the same time as the next video cause the same kind of drop in views? Or does that just happen if the videos come out a day or so apart to cannibalize each other? Is it the sort of thing that warrants including it as a "stick around for a small additional treat about last week's revolver video" segment at the end of whatever the next video you have planned is?

ViejoLobo

I recall reading somewhere that wax could be/was used to seal the caps against the elements. It would take a fine hand to prevent contamination of the primer with wax derived from tallow. If successful it would at least guarantee the loads in that cylinder would discharge reliably. I have not attempted this.

Garret Rain

Wondered the same thing. Appreciate the follow-up. To prevent the cap from getting wet, would greasing or waxing the nipples help?

EyeBall

I know nothing of the business of posting videos, so post as you see fit. This supplement does complete the subject matter and is educational, both to those with and without cap and ball revolver experience.

James Moechnig

Well that was quick and interesting. Thank you for posting it. This now-series has me thinking more about the challenges of everyday life in the weather with these weapons. Is it possible to load in the rain at all? What's the process for cleaning out a waterlogged flintlock or revolver and returning it to service? And does anything really work to keep those caps dry? I have read several references to greasing the balls at the front of the cylinder to keep the powder dry, but this seems to show that that's neither necessary nor sufficient to keep the gun workable.

MadZin Moo

Incredible how green that desert is...

John Hollowell

Cool, I was wondering what the result of recapping would be.

"Nipple Picks" is playing Cochella this year.

Mustafa's Fleas

Recommend you have a VERY strong antivirus software package in place before searching "Nipple Picks"!!!

Bruce Brodnax

Would sealing the caps on with melted candle wax prevent this? Just wondering how it would have been handled 150 years ago...

Ethan Hagerbaumer

They probably just tried to not fight in heavy rain...or I'm wrong and every one had wet caps.

Robert Farrow

can ca e waterproofed? Grease, wax, varnish

Pietta & Uberti are about the only ones now: Armi San Marco & (I forget the other Italian repro maker) were both swallowed up years ago. Uberti is now a division of Berretta, so even they've been swallowed up. Pedersoli is still independent, iirc, but they just contract from other manufacturers afaik, and maintain great QC, but they're more about long guns & they co$t accordingly.
