“So do all mutants handle the heat better than normal people?” Paul asked as he sipped what was left of his milkshake under the hot summer sun.

“I already told you, I’m not a mutant, silly,” Judy said. “You’re such a virgin. You see a girl with big boobs and you automatically assume it’s a mutation.”

“You just developed really fast, that’s all I’m saying,” Paul said, slurping up the last melted remains in his cup. “It’s suspicious.”

“I got news for you Paul. There are girls who are just naturally well endowed,” Judy said with a laugh. “Besides, you’ve never even seen a mutant before.”

“I’ve seen a mutant before!” Paul protested.

“Where?” Judy replied.

“… on television…”

Judy laughed so hard she practically made a scene. Paul’s cheeks flushed red.

“Look it’s not my fault I grew up in a Podunk town. We barely have neighbors let alone mutants.” Paul tossed away his empty milkshake into the trash, frustrated at his lack of worldliness.

It was the last week of summer vacation and Paul and Judy were enjoying their last few days before starting their senior year of high school. Paul was a thin boy, lanky with a carefree and nerdy attitude. He never made many friends, though he and Judy had always been thick as thieves.

Judy on the other hand was very pretty with a prominent bust. Puberty had hit her like a truck. She was kind, intelligent, and likely had the potential to hang with the popular crowd, but she considered herself something of an outcast and preferred to hang with the nerds and geeks. She thought the other girls were shallow and the other boys treated her like a piece of meat. Paul’s simple, innocuous friendship was more her speed.

“So, you gonna go to the pool tomorrow?” Paul asked.

“Pass…” Judy said, adjusting her turtleneck uncomfortably. “You know I don’t like being leered at.”

“Come on Jude. It’s so hot and you are gonna sweat to death if you keep dressing like a librarian.”

“I’d rather be hot that have people staring at my breasts.”

“Even me?”

“Especially you.”

A couple days past and Judy was suspiciously silent. No texts, no messages, no online chat rooms. She just sort of disappeared. Paul had no idea if they were going to share any classes this year and who knew if they were gonna be able to hang out together come college. He wasn’t exactly the type to reach out to others, preferring his social contact to be a bit more passive, but he worked up the nerve to call her anyway. He was elated when she finally picked up.

“Hey Judy!” he said. “Wanna go to the movies? I know how you love dark spaces. No one can oogle your breasts in the dark.”

“I er…” Judy said hesitantly.

“Oh come on, I was only joking. Don’t hold it against me,” Paul said with a laugh, hoping to not be held accountable for his words.

“No, it’s not that I just… something happened. Can you come over?” Judy’s voice was wavering. She was never the most confident but she usually sounded stronger than this.

“Did something happen? Are you OK?”

“Yes, just, come quick and don’t ring the bell OK? I’ll leave my window open”

Paul hadn’t snuck into Judy’s house in ages. It was something he used to do when they were in grade school, climbing up her backyard tree and sneaking into her window. They were young adults now. Why on earth would she need to keep things a secret?

As he neared her house, he saw her parents through the front window pacing furiously. They were debating something serious, practically yelling at each other. Paul winced just from the sight of it all, avoiding their gaze and sneaking into the back. While he was more out of shape than usual, his light frame made the tree climb an easy effort, allowing him to slink into Judy’s darkened room.

“Judy… you here?” he called out.

“Yeah… but… just stay there OK?...” she replied.

“What’s wrong? Your parents are going nuts downstairs,” he said.

Judy sighed heavily in the darkness. Paul could barely see her. She was covered in a blanket and faced away from him. “You were right..” she said.

“Awesome! I was right!... about what…” Paul said confused.

“You were right… I did mutate… My breasts were a mutation and then… I mutated again.” Judy’s voice was wavering just like it was on the phone. It sounded like she was struggling to keep herself together.

“That’s awesome!” Paul said. “Whatcha got? Horns? Elf ears? Think of what you can save on cosplay-“

“PAUL!” Judy shouted sternly. “This is serious. My whole life is going to change.”

“I’m sorry Jude. But we always talked about mutant so casually. You always said you wouldn’t mind if it happened to you.”

“Yeah… but really going through it is much scarier…” Judy sighed heavily. “Look, I want you to see alright just… don’t judge me..”

“I promise I won’t,” Paul said softly and sincerely.

“OK… turn on the light.”

Paul flipped the switch revealing a lump huddled in the blankets on the other side of the room. Judy took a deep breath and dropped them, standing up to show Paul her new body, including her two heads, one, the right one, with long hair, the other with much shorter hair.

“Woah… OK I wasn’t expecting that…” Paul said.

“You hate it… don’t you…” Judy’s right head said, tears welling up in her eyes.

“NO NO NO! I just… I mean it’s a pretty drastic change. So… are you like… two girls now, like conjoined twins?”

“No…” her right head said.

“Yes… said her left.

“Well.,.” the two said, beginning to speak in chorus. Her right head continued. We have the same memories. We are essentially the same person. It’s just that we are thinking independently.

“It’s like we branched off the second we mutated,” her left head said. “Though I can also always feel what she’s thinking, and she can do the same… but I know those thoughts are my own.”

“So… which one of you is Judy?” Paul said.

“I am,” both head said together, before sighing in frustration.

“OK, OK, I’m just going to call you sisters, OK? It’s probably easier that way.” Paul took a seat in Judy, or rather, the Judys’ desk chair. “So is that everything? Do you have to worry about mutating again?”

Long haired Judy sighed. “No. It’s… see…”

Short haired Judy piped up. “I lied to you.” She said. The other head looked away ashamed. “I… was hiding my first mutation from you.”

“Judy… come on you know I wouldn’t judge you…” Paul said.

“I just hated people looking!” the short haired head said. The long haired head sighed softly. “Paul I have four breasts…”

“Four breasts!” Paul said in surprise.

“Yeah,” right Judy replied. “I just stuffed them all into one oversized bra.” She lifted her shirt to reveal them, obviously uncomfortably stuffed in an awkward size bra. “I thought I could hide it but… I can’t hide two heads.”

Paul was just stunned, staring for a while.

“You think I’m a freak,” left Judy said.

“NO!” Paul protested. “Look… look… I know you don’t like when people stare at you but there’s nothing wrong with your body. I always thought you were a beautiful girl and that’s not just gonna change because of a mutation or two.

The two heads turned away and blushed hard. “People are gonna make fun of you if you associate with me. You know how school is…”

“Fuck school, and fuck anyone who has a problem,” Paul said. “You are my best friend Judy, I’m not going to abandon you” He extended his hand to her. “I’m here for you, OK?”

Judy shakily grabbed his hand and spoke in chorus. “O…OK… I think… I think with you in my corner I can face this head on.”

“Heads on…” Paul joked. He was met with overwhelming silence. “Well I thought it was funny…. So what should I call you?”

“What do you mean?” the right head said.

“Well you said you were two people now so how do I… differentiate you?”

Judy’s left head frowned. “I don’t think we are ready for that.”

Judy’s right head nodded. “We both feel like Judy right now. It feels like too much to give that up.”

Paul raised his hands. “That’s cool, that’s cool. Heck, you said you can feel each other’s thoughts. You don’t even have to tell anyone you are two different girls. Come out when you feel comfortable.”

Judy’s heads smiled. Paul was certainly putting her at ease. “Hey paul?” they said together.

“What?” he replied.

They leaned forward and gave him a kiss on each check. “I’m happy we are friends,” one head said. “I hope… maybe soon we can be more,” the other said. “But right now we need to break the news to our parents, wait here for me OK?”

Judy opened the door and started to go down the stairs. Paul, on the other hand rubbed his cheeks in disbelief. Was… he in a relationship now? With two girls?

… this was going to be one heck of a year.
