Officially, all mutations are a natural biological process. Unofficially, there are some strange items in this world that have almost magic effects, like a knife that can cut you to pieces and yet keep you alive the whole time. These peculiar “artifacts” are usually kept from public knowledge, either controlled by government agencies or kept in small tightly knit communities. This series is meant to explain some of these near magical items to you.

The Mutant Meteorite is a strange substance that falls to earth every so often, usually taking the form of a slightly glowing rock with an oily exterior. It has been falling to earth regularly since the late 1950s, though instances of touchdown have increased as of late.

To the outside observer it appears to be a normal rock. Its chemical composure does not seem too foreign, being made up of mostly iron, nickel, carbon, and assorted silicates, like most meteoroids. When handled by a mutant or someone with the mutant gene, for all intents and purposes, it is just a rock.

What’s notable, however, is its effects on people without a mutant gene. For some reason as of yet unknown to us, it has the ability to induce mutation in people who otherwise wouldn’t have mutated at all! These mutations tend to be extreme, averaging level 3 and 4 in nature. They are also responsible for some of the most bizarre mutant abilities, many of which defy our understanding of science.

All instances of Mutant Meteorite touchdown are watched heavily by world governments and most samples of the meteorite are strictly controlled for the safety of the public. The scientific community hopes to study this strange substance. It might give us the key to creating safe mutagens or, even better, unlock the secrets to the origins of mutation itself.
