 She was met by the smell of pancakes as she entered her apartment exhausted. Paul, her roommate, had come home earlier than usual.

“Hi Emi. Got some perfectly cooked pancakes coming out in a minute” Paul shouted from the kitchen.

“Paul, I have something important to tell you. I-I mutated today.”

Emi was a ball of conflicted feelings. She had confidence that Paul wouldn’t freak out at least. She had already told him the diagnosis, that her doctor said her genetics put her at high risk of mutation. They both knew it was only a matter of time. 

She knew Paul would support her. They were kind of like a couple even if they weren’t officially dating. Logically, she knew everything was going to be OK. Paul would see her new third leg and help her adjust, just as they always planned. Still, her legs trembled and she felt a lump in her stomach. She couldn’t help the creeping panic that set in when she realized that she was… different now.
