CAMERA WOBBLE
(and remember, you don't have to unzip the file; just direct the addon install straight to the .zip!)

Super excited about this :D  We can do addons, now!!

Well at least- my good (and ridiculously talented) friend Nathan Vegdahl can. Nathan's been living at the compound, and he's been making some of my dreams come true, starting with this idea I've wanted to implement for a while, but never really knew how to pull off! Quick-and-easy real-life camera shake. Check out the video above for a breakdown.

Eventually I think we'll be releasing this to the world at large, but in the meantime we're sharing it here!

Also seriously, let us know if there are specific shakes you think we're missing! I think you could create a lot of variety by changing the influence/location scale, but in particular a high-speed road chase shake could be really handy.

Nathan and I have actually been talking about a bunch of different stuff this past month (I've also been working like a madman on Dynamo (some potentially wild stuff on that front, actually))- I have a backlog of things I gotta start uploading here, but this is a good start!

Very cool!

Anonymous

Very cool! This patreon is a nice place to be and I get a real kick out of putting some money in the pockets of someone who makes the kind of stuff I want to watch.

Anonymous

!!!WOAH I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!

Anonymous

Game changing, or at the very least extremely time saving. Awesome stuff, I can't wait to abuse this addon!

Anonymous

Ahhh, I've wanted something like this for so long! This is awesome. Kudos to you and Nathan

Anonymous

Awesome! Thank you so so much!! 🤩

Anonymous

Hey Ian, a tutorial request... Would be it possible for you to do a tutorial on photogrammetry from recording to the profiles/settings you use in your Sony a7III and any normalization via LUTs/color grading you do in After Effects to do create the image sequence for Reality Capture? Thanks!

Anonymous

Better get that laundry!

Anonymous

Idea! What if there was an add bump button. Like if something explodes and the camera shakes and reacts to something or like a car runs over something. Would there be a way to take camera tracked footage of a bump and then act as an additive to the already established camera shake? Like I think of Jurassic park or other things where there’s a quick shake motivated by a scene action!

Anonymous

Thanks for not only coming up with the ideas, then funding them, but also giving great tutorials/hints for how it can be done in different ways! I really learn a lot for those asides!

Anonymous

Wow, thank you! This is really useful!

Anonymous

This is going to be so handy for all the first-person animation stuff I'm working on. Thanks for this Ian and Nathan! Edit: Is there any way to switch from one pre-set to another mid-animation? (eg walk to run).

Kai Christensen

Have you watched the burger photoscan video? It's an older one here on the Patreon, so you may have to scroll quite a while to find it, but IIRC you should be totally fine using just a phone camera--no special presets or normalization needed. Just make sure you're properly exposing the subject, and then take like every fourth frame of a walk around video of it and feed that to RC.

Anonymous

Woah! So good man. Thanks Gents! Enjoy life in the compound!

Anonymous

Looks really good! Also, are those photoscanned buildings in that demo scene?

Anonymous

This is amazing! Thank you🤘

Anonymous

Amazing!!!!! Thanks

IanHubert

Nathan's been talking about that as a possibility for version 2! Right now you can only do one, although you COULD parent two cameras together and animate the intensity so they trade :P

Anonymous

This is going to be a game-changer for speeding up my workflow, amazing stuff! Thanks to Ian and Nathan!

Engoneer

This is the kind of addon I want, camera shake is such a tedious thing to do that isn't too much fun to deal with since it's almost always an afterthought. Thanks so much, I cant wait to use it.

Anonymous

Thats just fantastic!

Anonymous

I think a couple good presets could be gimbal and steadicam! Gimbals have a very distinctive "digital" smoothness where the rotational movement is totally locked, but you still get a lot of parallax from footsteps. Steadicams maybe have a bit more rotational movement, but much less parallax shake because of the larger rig. It would be cool to get that wide steadicam look from The Shining (now that I think about it... you could probably extract camera movements from the film itself)

Anonymous

This is fantastic, thank you guys for all your hard work on this

Phil South

I will use this all the time. :) When you go away for a bit you always come back with a gift.

Anonymous

I've always wanted such an add-on! Thank you, Mr. Ian and Mr. Nathan.

Theeb

Unless I'm missing something I think this addon would benefit from timescale setting, at least a 30/60 fps switch. But otherwise this is extremely useful, thank you!!! ! !

Anonymous

This is so useful! I was literally adding noise to a camera last night and finding it so hard to get something that wasn't obviously unrealistic. This is a huge help!

Anonymous

My apologies if I missed it, but adding own camera movements to addon library would be nice, maybe a "add curves to Wobble library" button in graph tab? Or could we just copy paste curves into wobble_data.py?

Anonymous

Nathan seems like a real one; when you shout him out for doing a cool thing the first thing he does is share the credit. Respect

Anonymous

it would be a dream to have a one-click camera track hahaha lol ...

Anonymous

thank you thank you thank you thank you!!

whittacles

What a useful tool, thanks to you both! Side note, that's a really impressive photoscanned environment - is it one of yourts? If so, curious of the technique as it seems to have held onto the small details (such as the balcony bars) really well!

Anonymous

You're the best!!

Anonymous

The fabulous, most groovy. CAM WOBBLE!

Anonymous

that's so cool, thanks guys! Will definitely use this!

Anonymous

Thank youuuuuu! your awesome

Anonymous

sweet mother of wobble! ian adjusting the camera while nathan was talking was adowobbl- adorable.

Anonymous

That rocks. Brilliant idea. Thank you !

Anonymous

what!!!yyds

Anonymous

The idea of emulating distinctive camera motion from well-known films by using tracking is pretty awesome... this add-on is the kind of thing that could end up with an open source library of camera shake styles.

Anonymous

amazballs!! thanks

Anonymous

What about a Crane type shot, is that in there, sometimes the crane just barely bobs like a very slow wave....or overshoots a bit and comes back into line....

Anonymous

super cool, just tried it out, thank you!

Anonymous

Definitely! That's also planned for a future release. I'm thinking it will use the frame rate setting from Blender's output properties, maybe with an optional override if you want to get funky with it.

Anonymous

Wow this is great! Was that first environment (the town) a 3d scan?

Anonymous

Holy cats, this is cool. I just started experimenting with camera shake last night, but I was applying it in post through DaVinci Resolve. Its camera shake has a lot of great options, but it essentially boils down to adding noise to a sine wave, so it _can_ look good, but it takes forever to dial it in, and still feels random. Great for explosions and earthquakes, not so much for footsteps. I'll be redoing some animation I made yesterday using this addon. Thank you!

Anonymous

Very nice. Cheers to both of you. 🍻

Anonymous

This is incredible, thank you! And now I'm thinking of the possibilities - hand zooms would be an awesome add-on; options could range from The Office style documentary hand zooms, to JJ Abrams snap zooms at spaceship scale!

Anonymous

ok, one more I see that it works well with steadycam 2d or closeup 3D for the effect I'm looking for, but now...would there be any way to have a checkbox for a seamless looping option so for example if I'm doing a 30second loop, it starts and ends on the same values with linear interpolation. Thanks!

Anonymous

ok this is excellent! some speed controls would be nice though, and maybe "event" shakes? like bumps and such, where you maybe set the first frame (though that would perhaps be moving into layers territory)

Anonymous

Another thing I just realized this needs is a time offset slider, so that all the camera shakes don't start with the same animation

Anonymous

I fall over all the time though............

Davide Bertolini

And it works perfectly on Linux too! Brilliant!

Anonymous

Incredible, man. This is gonna contribute to so much dope shit

Anonymous

ian whats that photo scan your using and can we have a link

Anonymous

This is awesome!

Anonymous

I knew it. Elves

Anonymous

For some reason it's not showing up as a zip file for me. Am I doing something wrong?

Anonymous

Excellent! Thank you Ian and Nathan! You guys are heroes!

IanHubert

You mean the link? You gotta click through to the download page this time :D

Anonymous

This may be overly ambitious, but maybe a neat feature would be a way to add your own track as an option in the addon. Maybe even include some kind of interpolation to help it loop automatically?

Anonymous

Thanks to you both! Possible Addition, I know it would be hard to fly but a cam like that would be cool lol... train, bus ride, back of a 4x4 truck on a dirt road, motorcycle, or maybe high speed drive,

Anonymous

excellent

Anonymous

This is going to be so amazing for the movie I'm doing!! Thank you!

Anonymous

Is there a way that I could change the origin of the camera to the camera itself? It's a little tricky to edit the camera in the camera view. I hope that makes sense

Anonymous

Definitely gonna use this in a shot I'm working on right now! If there's any way to make a preset for an accurate rotational shake like you demonstrated at the beginning of the video, that would be awesome.

IanHubert

Oh huh! Has it changed the camera origin? Ideally it changes nothing except a bit of additional movement has been placed on top- can you explain what's happening a bit more?

IanHubert

You mean at around 1:00? That would be useful! And in theory it wouldn't even be hard IF you could change the origin of cameras. That said, the usual workaround is to parent the camera to an offset empty, and animate the empty instead, which gives you a ton of control, but it does make it a bit more of a hassle to control the camera view from inside the camera (since you can't just click on the camera border to select it and start moving around). Actually- I wonder why you can't change the origin of cameras. Could be just the way data is organized (whereas objects have an origin point, but also a bunch of mesh data or whatever that can be offset wherever, the camera IS the origin point?)

IanHubert

Ooooo yeah those are some good ones! Especially flying (if I were doing flying with the current version, using "Investigation 3d", but setting the location scale up to some higher number so the camera drifts around more might give a good effect?)

Anonymous

Realy cool :O imma experiment with this a lot! also would be cool to add own camera shakes, if that would not be too complicated to implement, still suoper cool🤛🏼 ah and also an offset slider would be helpful as someone alredy mentioned

Anonymous

This makes my new First-Person project much easier.

Anonymous

This is so cool thank you so much.

Anonymous

It's certainly not impossible, but I'm not sure if that's something we want to take the time to support. Every feature we add is something more we'll need to support, with its own bugs and things that might confuse users. So I'd like to keep the scope of the addon as narrow and targeted as we can while still addressing its primary use-case well. Having said that, the addon is going to be open source and free for everyone to use (technically it already is by license), so people can always make their own custom versions with their own custom camera shakes if they want. It would take a bit of work for someone to do, of course, but it's not too bad. I can include a short "how to" in the documentation for people who want to dive into that.

Anonymous

Wow! Thank you!

Anonymous

This is amazing Ian, thanks so much for sharing this with us. One question, is it possible to bake out these keys as an action or anything in case I wanted to layer a camera hit, or thud midway through a shot that's using your camera wobble? And in asking for other wobbles we might like, how about that, a camera hit/thud, like something heavy hitting the ground near the camera. I have an old Maya rig that had this that was cool. Thanks!

Anonymous

Yay for Nathan content! I also like using the metahuman rig as a scene scale reference.

Anonymous

Ooh, wow! Thanks guys, that's just aweome! I tried to mimic walking camera wobble using noise modifiers, but somehow the movement turned out a bit weird and slow and left me a bit nauseated in the process :P But your plugin saved my day/guts and "Walking 2D" camera shake worked out great! On the subject of camera shake personality, how about a "drunk/dizzy wobble", or a "wounded limping wobble" (just a flesh wound) ? Perhaps this could be achieved by playing more with the influence/scale parameters and mix in some noise modfier on top of it?

Anonymous

Man i remember watching nathan rigging videos a few times amd always wonder what happen to him awesome about the addon you guys are killing it great for you

Anonymous

I already posted once but wanted to say thanks again. I blocked out about 10 shots for my short yesterday and used this on all of them. Paired it with a bit of a noise curve modifier on a couple long lens closeups too and it was brilliant, and saved me a ton of work, thanks so much for this guys!

Anonymous

this is awesome! Thank you

Anonymous

What about a setting to automatically control the amount of camera wobble by how much the camera is moving?

Anonymous

Hey Ian, When will we get another Livestream? I really enjoyed the last one and I think we should have them more often.

Anonymous

So wonderful, Ian. Thanks so much, great tool :-)

Anonymous

Can't wait for the Battleship :D

Anonymous

This is great! Thanks, Ian and team!

Anonymous

Will there ever be a way to keyframe between the types of camera shakes? Like to transition from out car window 3d to walking 2d, mid animation? Thanks so much <3

Anonymous

I want to kiss you!

Anonymous

This is amazing!!!!!

Noah Hitz

This is so cool!!!!!

Anonymous

Hey, Ian and Nathan. I'm getting an error when I try to add a shake to my camera. The first version of the addon worked perfectly, this one refuses to work without an error popup. I can send you a screenshot of the error if you like.

IanHubert

Dang, thanks John! I'd love a screenshot. Nathan's working on figuring out an error someone else sent in, too- I'm wondering if it's the same issue.

Anonymous

Here's that screenshot. This appears every time I add or remove a shake but the shake never actually functions, though I can push all the buttons and move all the sliders in the plugin's settings. https://imgur.com/HJtJOQ3

Anonymous

did you know of the virtucam addon, that lets you record camera motion with your phone?

Anonymous

I love this addon. But is anyone else having problems with it in Blender 3.0? The sliders don't work very well, it's not possible to adjust the influence and location scale accurately. Either it gets too intense or I get inactive.

Anonymous

Hi Ian, hi Nathan - thanks for this fantastic addon - couldn't live without it any longer. Unfortunately, with Blender 3.1 for the Mac M1 I am experiencing the same issue as the one described by John Abraham a couple of months ago. I have reverted to V1 which works fine, but I am curious if you have found the root cause and a fix ?!

Anonymous

I am having issue with 3.1 and M1 Mac too

Anonymous

Having previously used noise modifiers in the graph editor, I see this being incredibly helpful for adding a subtle touch of realism to hand held shots.

Anonymous

This is excellent, but is their a way to slow the effect, to make it suitable for 60fps?
