Just a quickie!

RAILINGS! I hate 'em! I've modeled so many railings! But lately I've tried to embrace the railing. While still getting it finished as quickly as friggin' possible.

BUT YES! Working hard to get a locked edit on the first episode of Dynamo Dream! My goal was the end of the year, and I'm REALLY close. I might have a piece of VO or two that I still need to slip in there, but I should have this thing sent off to the sound team VERY soon. I couldn't be more excited :D

I really think you guys are going to dig it- not sure if I needed to spend 2 years on full-digital B-roll, but... I also don't think I regret it.

Quick Railing Tip

Definitely something I'm going to be putting to use! I've been horrible at making railings and relied on "well, it's far away anyway" for now but this opens up a lot of creative possibilities. Also, happy new year Ian! Thank you for making this year a bit better, I've been able to create a lot because of you.

Ah that's so good to hear!! Happy New Year to you too! And hah! Yeah, with both Blender and just regular old drawing, sometimes I find myself making a thing a certain way just because that's how I've always done it, and occasionally I have to catch myself, "just cause it's how you did it 10 years ago doesn't necessarily mean it's the best way??" Hope all's well!

So excited for Dynamo Dream! I can't wait for that to come out, and take your time by all means. I do have a question: When it releases, will it be released on the KarmaPirates channel along with Dynamo, or will you upload it to your own channel? I've got notifications on both, but I'd still like to know!

Very cool looking stuff! If you need real close-up, the "skin" modifier works well, especially on the edges where the wireframe modifier gives you open edges.

Oh, and the Triangulate faces shortcut is Ctrl-T. I use it all the time, paired with Tris to Quads (Alt-J) to clean up ugly topology, especially for subdivision surfaces.

Thanks so much for your wisdom on this. Happy New Year to you and yours!! 🤘🖖🍻

He’s still holding the sword! Haha :-) I love these kind of background details. I’ve only ever seen it in Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker movies. Thanks for all the fun videos Ian, don’t forget to take a break sometimes. You work so hard! Have a great 20201.

IanHubert

Thanks Evan!! And yeah- considering my current channel has a bunch more subscribers, I was planning on releasing it there (I want folks to SEE this thing!)- and... I guess while I think it's cool that folks can go back and watch the old episodes, I don't want the implication to be that people have to watch work I did a decade ago to watch the latest episode :P

IanHubert

Ah! You know what, I haven't played with skin nearly enough- that would probably work better than the wireframe modifier in a bunch of cases, huh? Thanks, Paul!

Excellent... I once followed a tutorial with railings made from images with transparency... This is so much more SENSIBLE!! Thanks for all the tutorials and insight over the year Ian, it's been a pleasure to watch and learn. Looking forward to next years offerings... Have a great New Year!

Hey, Ian! I think the deformations aren't happening that way :) Here is my take (imagebin, because Patreon doesn't allow to attach a screenshot): https://imagebin.ca/v/5mX4cmYKwGj9 BTW: have you thought about crowd-sourcing to Dynamo? You do great tutorials, we are growing, but then why not just let your army send you some "stuff" for fun to at least be a bit famous in Dynamo credits? :)

dynamo dream is going to be visually stunning!

I really like the reference to my name on that shot. It's an honor :D

On how much Samples do you render these scenes? Do you use Denoise in Animation? Great work ian!

I sometimes import a svg I created in gimp from a jpg of a black and white fence/railing design. Once you import the svg to blender it’s already a curve so you can just convert it to an object or bevel the curve and bingo bango you got a railing.

IanHubert

It sort of depends! If a scene is "open" enough (light paths can easily find an exit or whatnot), sometimes I can get away with as few as 50- but if there's something particularly tricky I occasionally go as high as 2,000? Usually it's around 200 (with Denoising for everything, absolutely! I love the Optix denoise :D) Thanks, Sebastian!
