Over the past few weeks I've been learning animation in Blender. I haven't had a lot to show because it's such a time-consuming process and there's so much to learn. But this is something I completed today and I thought some folks might be interested in seeing it, if only to see some progress.

I had a few goals for this. I wanted to try lip syncing, and to do it with an abstract face where I didn't have to worry about texturing or details. Originally I was just going to do something generic, but realized that Hexadecimal from Reboot fit the bill pretty well. Easy to model, no textures needed and I could just take a clip from the show. Perfect!

I realize it's not the most complex thing, or even very good. But there was sooo much time put into this on the back end. Without going into too much detail, I started over from scratch several times and I think I made every possible mistake you can make while trying to get this finished. It was a bit of an excruciating learning process.

But encouragingly, once I got everything set up and working, the actual animation was pretty straightforward. So I'll definitely continue to practice, and maybe can even move on to furry characters at some point!

Haha I recognize that face/mask even without the filename

2022-02-06 18:08:49 AHHH HEXIDECIMAL! REBOOT! MY FAVE~ :D Also, I love how you picked her to practice lip synching, but she was the one character on the show that never had her mouth moving, hehehe. I mean, she _eventually_ had a moving face, but the thing with her was the many masks that were all static expressions, right? :} Anyway, I still need to watch your clip now. :> Ahh, nice work! Great stuff for a first go. I wish I knew the show well enough to be able to pinpoint the exact scene/episode that was, haha. But I'm sure I can hear her pet (Scuzzy?) in the background. Or maybe one of those little worm-null-things?

Hey thanks! I always thought her character design was a pretty clever design by the animators to not have to animate another mouth. x) But it worked well and added a nice dimension to the character. I just used her because of the simplicity / stylization of her face while still being a recognizable character. The clip is from one of the early season one eps, but I don't remember which one. Scuzzy is with her in pretty much every scene though, so that's a pretty safe bet. x)
