When I started working in 3D this week, I expected to just fool around for a day or two, do a few simple things, and then work on other stuff. But I got so engrossed in it I made an entire bust of Pulsar. I've linked a few shots to this post, and there's also a turn-around video attached.

There are so many things wrong with this that it's hard to know where to begin. But it turned out well enough to get me excited and encourage me to work on more in the future.

I learned a ton about how (not) to structure facial topology and how to add detail to meshes after the first and second subdivisions. This is the first time I've ever modeled an organic form (opposed to the spaceships and buildings and stuff I've done in the past). All things considered, I'm surprised it didn't end up more janky. But I included a screenshot of the mesh so people who know what they're looking at can see all the mistakes. There are a lot of poles and pinch points; places with too much detail where there shouldn't be and other places where the mesh doesn't follow the form the way it should.

As such this makes it totally unsuitable for rigging and animating. Even Pulsar's intense stare is a little off-putting. But the mesh is complicated and difficult to handle enough that I didn't bother trying to modify his expression too much from the default "creepy model stare". It's a little bit disappointing to know that if I want a 3D model of Pulsar, I pretty much have to start over from scratch after doing this one. But I already know I could do it a lot better, and in the process probably get the proportions of Pulsar closer to what I have in my head.

All things considered though, this was far too much fun, and modeling was quite relaxing! There's a very real possibility I'll be offering commissions in 3D in the future. I've already had some big plans for 2021, but this gives me an entirely new avenue to explore, and I might end up doing a lot more with 3D than I imagined.

Very cool!

Amazing work!! I kind of want to see some of the monsters that were made on the way!

Amethystine

That's so good for your first go at doing a character like this! :D And the idea of you doing 3D comms is amazing. :}

pulsarbird

Thanks :> There weren't too many "monsters" really. x) Just refining the basic form into closer and closer renditions of Pulsar. Every once in a while I'd get stuck and have to go back a few steps, but usually because of some technical problem rather than how it was looking.

pulsarbird

Thanks very much! ^^ I think the biggest hurdle to me doing 3D comms is just the speed at which I can do them. I need a lot of practice to get better and faster first. This took long enough that I don't know I could charge an appropriate amount for my time yet. On the plus side, the 3D market is increasingly in demand and it's much more technical, so the barrier of entry for new artists is a lot higher. So it's a skill set worth pursuing. There's also the technical aspect. I wouldn't really consider a model of this quality (technically, not necessarily visually) something I'd be okay with taking money for. So I definitely need to get better from a technical standpoint as well. But I think with some practice I shouldn't have too much trouble with that.

Amethystine

Well, I suppose it comes down to if you're thinking of selling the models themselves, or just the ability to create a scene or a character in 3D, to 'photo' them for artistic effect.

pulsarbird

One idea I've been considering is 3D adoptables. I've never really been a fan of the whole adoptable thing, but it seems to be fairly popular. I figure if I'm already modeling a character for practice, why not sell it when it's done? Would help cover some of the cost of the time I spend on the model, and the buyer gets something a little more unique than a regular illustration. And if I can make the topology of the model good enough for rigging, I could include that with the adoptable too. Adds a bit more value to the idea.

Have you seen the movie Surf's Up? I don't know why but this rig reminds me of that movie.

pulsarbird

Nope, I haven't seen it. This isn't a rig though, it's just a model. Actually it's not even a solid model, just a mesh. x)

Kujiiro

Whoa! Hell yeah dude. Seeing you enter the 3rd dimension is exciting :3
