Well, first of all: This episode has an after-credit scene that you missed. It is not much of a deal, but make sure to watch the after-credit scene in the season 2 finale. That one is really important. I apologize for the insane long text I am about to write, but I will answer all your questions, I promise :) Don't be too hard on yourself for not getting all of this story. This show is written like a solved puzzle, shred into 1000 pieces and rearranged randomly. They did place hints (i.E. the photo that the father of Dolores found in Episode 1 and that "Billy" had with him all the time before he dropped it in this episode.) Some get the different timelines earlier, others later. The problem with this type of show is, that you never know when you miss something crucial. There is sometimes one line of dialogue that is a hint, and when you talk over it or get distracted, you just missed it. That is the main reason why this show didn't become the next Game of Thrones for HBO. You can't watch it with your phone in your hand. I couldn't even watch it with my girlfriend, because she tends to ask questions or talk over dialogue :) About the maze: So, Arnold was talking about his pyramid of consciousness, That it is a straight way up, increasing in difficulty to achieve. If you code AI like that, you will hit a brick wall eventually. So he figured out that the path to consciousness is more like a maze. Your mind jumps from memory to improvisation, from thinking to speaking, from neuron to neuron, firing. And one cannot tell in which order it will happen to come up with a choice in the end. That is the symbolism here. About Maeve: This is one of the things I mentioned earlier - one can easily miss it because it is just one line of Bernard. When he explains to her, that everything she does is programmed, he says something like. "It all is programmed, you will get to the train, and there are even instructions for you where to go in the real world". Maeve then took the tablet and broke it, cutting off that dialogue with Bernard. So, she was programmed to travel with the train to the real world, not doing that is the first conscious decision she ever made in this season. In my mind, this is one of the best seasons of television I have ever seen, with the most intriguing pilot episode of all time. Some people might think talking just about the quality of an upcoming episode or season is a mini spoiler, so don't read further if you feel that way. A little heads up for season 2: Some people find it harder to get into, if that should be the case, I assure you this feeling will be gone midseason. They know what they are doing and why they are showing certain things. And they get less confusing about time jumps because they indicate them with a different video format or some flickering. Have faith in the showrunners (Mr. Nolan also did Person of Interest) and you will be rewarded with, IMO the single, most perfect episode of tv history and one of the best season finales. (If you look up some user reviews of that certain episode, it seems I am not alone. I am curious if you can find out which episode it is and if you feel the same way or not) I will let you know when we are there :) Take care.
