Man, do I wish I could erase my memory and watch this show for the first time again. I just love this brilliant season. I won't spoil anything, but let me just tell you that you missed a lot of clues (like almost everybody I know) in this episode :) You probably have seen Episode 10 by now, but anyways: 1. Maybe take a look at that picture again that was handed to Billy in the beginning. 2. Take a look at the severed leg again after Billy cleared the scene later in that episode. 3. Take a look at the church Dolores went in and maybe remember how it looked when Ford looked at it in an early episode. 4. Notice how the clothes of Dolores change constantly, there is a reason for it :)

I feel like you're... overcomplicating things... an odd thing to say about a show like Westworld, I know. It IS complicated and non-linear... but it is also showing you the puzzle pieces you need. I think a good suggestion would be to rewatch season 1 before starting season 2 (watching other people's reactions to it would probably be a good and briefer way to realize you did in fact know what you needed to know... even if you felt baffled at the time).
