I think it was very fitting, that they put this story in this episode. Joel lying there, close to dying, has now the time to realize, that he can't ignore it anymore: Ellie has become his second daughter (hence the holding of the hands in the end). While he is figuring that out, they give the audience the opportunity to also fall in love with Ellie - if they haven't yet already. This was so well done and both of them (Bella Ramsey and Storm Reid) were outstanding here. Especially for their age! Little funfact - the pills from the dead guy looked the same as the ones, that Joel was "trading" in the first episode. And you mixed up, that Ellie was talking about Riley with Tess. Actually it was with Marlene, who, at this point in the story already knows who Ellie is. Don't forget, that Marlene said to Ellie "They didn't put you there, i did" when they were talking about the Fedra-school. There seems to be a specific reason, why Marlene didn't want Ellie to go with Riley to Atlanta. ** LITTLE GAME-SPOILER ** This story was pretty much the DLC to the first game called "Left Behind". Some scenes have been adapted shot by shot.
