I just love this episode for so many reasons. It was just a great story and also an hommage to the games where you could find all those notes which told the backstory of the world and other people. Game Spoilers from now on: I don't know how long ago you played the game or how deep you went into all the the letters you could find - but in the game we met a very grumpy and harsh Bill and found a hanging corpse. Later we find a letter from Frank (who couldn't handle Bills paranoia anymore and wanted to run away, got bitten in the process and hung himself) You then get the car and go on your journey and never saw Bill again. For Joel it was an important moment because he saw how Bill treated Ellie and became much more friendly with her after. So the showrunners said that this episode is were they deviated the most, because they thought that this was an opportunity to actually show two people beating this world and growing old together instead of the bad outcome their story had in the game. It serves the same purpose though, Joel and Elli still get their car and through Bills letter, Joel gets pretty much on the same path regarding Eillie. This was just an amazing piece of writing to tie all that together, do something complety different and still achieve the same thing.
