It's not really a good episode, but if you saw the spin off, it would make it a bit better. It's like you said, there are too many characters in this episode, too much talking and exposition, not enough story. But they kinda had to do it exactly this way. The spin off series ended after one season of 13 episodes with a "to be continued" (they thought there would be a second season) So when they realized, that there won't be a season 2 of The Lone Gunmen, and there won't be a tenth season of The X Files, they took the last opportunity they had to make a part 2 of The Lone Gunmen finale in the ninth season of The X Files. And that's what it is. You saw the second part of a twoparter here, you never saw part 1, wich is the Lone Gunmen finale. Morris Fletcher and Mulder were in part 1. Yves and Jimmy had to be in the episode, because they were maincharacters 4 and 5 in The Lone Gunmen series, appeared in every single episode, and they were awesome. Way funnier in the spin off, they feel a bit out of character here, because it's such a sad episode, there is not really space for humor. Then there is the nerd, you said he died in that season 6 episode. Funny thing: That was his twin brother, so not really him. However, he was a recurring character in the spin off series, so he had to be in this episode. Duchovny wasn't in this episode for obvious reasons, Gillian Anderson only had little time. So they had go give Dogget and Reyes a big part, because it is still an X Files episode and they are The X Files now. There was a Skinner centric episode in The Lone Gunmen, and it feels right that he's in this one. It's interesting to watch this ep with the audio commentary on DVD/Blu Ray. I think the writers knew, that they aren't making the best X Files ep here, but it was their only chance to give some closure and paying tribute to the Spin Off, wich was much better than this crossover episode. 20th century Fox didn't want them to make this ep, but the writers said, they wouldn't write anything else. So Fox said, okay, but kill them off then. Fox never shared the writers love and believe in that spin off series and those characters. I'm kinda happy, that they did this. After watching and enjoying the Spin Off in between season 8 and 9, I always wondered what happened to Jimmy and Yves, and if they ever would make an appearance on The X Files.
