Nerd Going Outside

So, an explanation for the Herc/Carver conversation: Carver offered Herc a hypothetical: He could have any women he wanted, any in the world, and do anything to or with them he wanted. In return, however, Herc would have to have sex with one guy, one time. He's trying to get Herc to name the guy. Herc resists at first - he (correctly) assumes that once he names the guy he'll be mocked. After naming a bunch of women he wants and what he wants to do to them, he finally names the guy, a baseball player named Gus Triandos, and is (predictably) mocked for it. A couple of pieces of cool trivia from this episode:: One of the creators of The Wire is a former Baltimore homicide reporter, the other is a former Baltimore homicide detective. They met/were working in Baltimore in the 80s/early 90s during the crack epidemic, so the show is all based on real events and experiences, fictionalized. It's filmed entirely in Baltimore and, aside from some of the leads, uses almost all locals from Baltimore as actors and extras. This season really starts ramping up on 'cameos' from real-world Baltimore folks involved in policing/politics/the drug trade. Major Colvin, the new character who gives the speech about the paper bag late in the episode? He has a second-in-command named Lieutenant Mello. Mello is an older white guy with a mustache who you see in a number of scenes this episode. The actor who plays Mello is a guy named Jay Landsman. Jay Landsman is a former Baltimore homicide detective who was the loose inspiration for the CHARACTER named Jay Landsman who we've known from Season 1 - the fat Homicide sergeant who was McNulty's boss and always sucks up to Rawls. The real guy Jay Landsman auditioned to play the character based on him in Season 1, didn't get it, but was brought in to play the Mello character. He's not really an actor, just a retired cop. Another one: The character of Avon Barksdale was inspired by a number of real life figures, but the biggest inspiration for Avon was a guy named 'Little' Melvin, who was a major drug dealer in 80s Baltimore before going to prison, responsible for many of the same things Avon is in the show. David Simon, the Wire creator who had written a bunch of articles about Little Melvin during his trial and interviewed him back in the day, approached him when he got out of prison about being in the show. Near the end of the episode, Major Colvin visits 'the Deacon', a church-going man who says fighting drugs is 'like sweeping leaves on a windy day.' The actor playing tthe Deacon is Little Melvin, the 'real' Avon Barksdale.

A friend of mine introduced me to Lil Melvin a few years back when I was living in Baltimore. She had known him since the eighties. And one night I was walking down the block and ran into Sonja Sohn(Kima Greggs) and Anwan Glover(Slim Charles). They were all super nice.
