I'm sure you have worked out by now that Polly isn't their Mother!!!! it's their Aunt. Tommy is a strategist and his mind never stops working because he is so clever. Such brilliant writing, character development, cinematograpghy and music going against the music of the time. All in all it gets you hooked straight away.
