"Nerd Going Outside"'s breakdown is excellent. I would also point out that the bar scene and many other scenes are part of a theme throughout all the seasons of the Wire, of an older form of life that is fading, for a variety of reasons. The decline of American industry and the collapse of the old unions and trades are tied to the drugs and crime, in the Wire's makers' view. You'll notice in the background of many scenes are old vacant factories and industrial buildings. Like Avon represents something of the old tight-knit familial black community, Sobotka represents the old working class blue collar Americans, who were also from small ethnic communities often (here, Polish).

Dude you need to chill, every five seconds saying you don't know what's going on - you're not supposed to man, it's the first episode of the season, it's a complex show, don't beat yourself up cus you're not an expert on the Baltimore polish community or some shit - it's the wire lol, you'll get there, just have to relax and go with it. And the scene in the bar was just about establishing the characters and shit - work hard play hard working class boozers, not every scene has to progress a plot or be about some detective shit. It's a rich web.
