Was getting extremely confused why you were getting confused or frustrated. This is the Catholic Church we're talking about here not some private institution. Whoever heard of something so crazy as the Catholic Church getting away with heinous stuff for too long especially in the US in the 70s. :D They wield a tremendous amount of institutional and cultural power and the police are not going to just boot the door down based on the hearsay of a single (lesbian) reporter's story she's writing and selling a book on, and would probably handle with ridiculously kid gloves for as long as possible as they do with child abuse allegations IRL. It's not right but doesn't strike me as ridiculously unrealistic luke warm response from the police with regard to religious institutions tbh

Back in the early 70s, there was an institution in the States called "Willowbrook" that was exposed for keeping patients in horrific conditions, and abusing them in a sadistic and prolonged manner, by a journalist who managed to gain access to the building and capture the conditions/abuse on video. Even after that video was broadcast to all of America, Willowbrook stayed open for 10 more years before being forced to close.
