For me, I think it's comforting to see that even in a Utopian society, people, whether once Starfleet or not, regular citizens, can still fail and falter and struggle, and then someone like Picard can show up in their lives and offer them a second chance. Picard has always been that way and it's one of the reasons I love his character. And people have struggled on Star Trek and failed as enlightened humans many times. War, crime, profit, and drinking of real alcohol has been depicted before, so in the 24th century there are still vices, and now smoking is still around on Earth but I'm certain frowned upon, etc, because it's not bettering yourself. Which, for me, speaks to humans true nature of being human. We will fail at some point, but we have to work to pick ourselves back up. One thing I have to remind myself is up until DS9, it had been centuries since the Federation had been in a war. This is after the war, after setbacks for the Federation, and humans were once again faced with issues like PTSD, etc, that had been behind them for a very long time. So, I don't know, I just think it's interesting to see people still on Earth being human and facing problems, being allowed to (in this universe) to make mistakes. Not everyone is perfect and 100 percent all the time. I'm anticipating Picard helping them, and them helping him, get back on track to betterment of themselves and proving their worth.

only humans who have failed are those who made this series

Another thought on how I've always viewed Star Trek is that Human means imperfection. We are all imperfect beings striving for something better. Utopia means perfect. So it's kind of impossible to achieve real Utopia; however, I like the fact that it's possible for imperfect humans to achieve a society that is in nature a Utopia. Imperfect people making a perfect world. I think that's why I let the imperfect in Star Trek pass because I know they'll find a way.

It's not about utopia, it's about the feel of it, same like making cars: as time goes changes come, but you have to keep the feel, and when say you, I mean: manufacturer, and if Mercedes suddenly sounds like Bmw, drive like Audi, steer like Lexus, etc., it's completely new feel, and feel is what makes car to be The car

Everyone has their own views and opinions which they're entitled to of course. I for one do not like what the new writers have done with this show. Its progressively becoming less star trek as each episode goes by and just using the franchise to push the shows numbers with picard at the helm. Interestingly the 30 page outline/overview they used to convince Patrick Stewart to eventually agree to return as Captain Picard, got thrown out the window as soon as shooting began. I can see him walking away after season 2 with all the bad reviews and negativity its produced. (as theyve already started filming). Die hard fans are not happy (myself included) that they are re-writing star trek lore and ignoring canon to fit plot-lines and make the show gritty. Its just not 'Trekky Enough' sorry folks but thats the truth! Raffi's character is just ridiculously inaccurate, 2 dimensional and completely out of perspective. Why are we seeing her living in a trailer park and referencing picards 'chateau' as a mansion? Theres absolutely no reason for her to be living like shes poor? There is no poverty. She lost her security clearance that's all. They've reduced her to a person of colour making references to a white privileged male and his aspirations of wealth Don't even get me started on this new stereotypical 'Han-Solo' Pilot they've added!

I agree completely, illness of modern entertainmemt is what we see here and all around Raffi's "mobile home" is at Vasquez rocks(kirk vs gorn) which is star trek sacred location 😉 and they've made a joke of it, and why is she calling Picard: JL, like she knows him longer than Riker or Data, oh man..,don't get me started

I understand how Picard doesn't "feel" like what has come before in Star Trek, but TNG didn't feel like TOS, and DS9 didn't feel like TNG. So, maybe I'm okay with Picard not feeling like either of those because it isn't. It's it's own thing, a mystery drama that will take a season to unravel and solve. With that story, I like the more serialized format. I'm not sure if it's the style of storytelling that is what making it not "feel" like Star Trek for some or the issues being addressed for others, or both, but for me be personally, I don't have an issue with either. I'm enjoying the show for many reasons and some of it might have to do that it's not another show about Starfleet exploring space. But, again, just my own personal feeling about it.
