Yes, they wrote her out, and they never gave us the exact reason, that's why a lot of rumors were going around. Rumors like she had an affair with Seth McFarlane and they broke up. 🙈 But it's more likely, that there were scheduling conflicts, because she moved on with other projects. However, it was not their intention to write her off permanently, they tried to leave the door open for her. And that might be the reason, why they wrote the episode like this. They found a way to treat Alara, but in the end it was the characters decision to leave. However, fans were very disappointed. She was a fan favorite character.
