This topic generated quite a bit of discussion. Who has what? What does it mean? How does it work? And so on. Now that all tiers have read the part where Liu Jin meets his dragon great-great-great-great grandpa, I figure I can lay things out a little more clearly.

First, let’s talk about what the hierarchy of elemental mastery actually means. I want to stress that a “higher” color does not necessarily correlate with greater raw power, even if that frequently ends up being the case.

Let me make it a little simpler.

The hierarchy of lightning goes: Red - Blue - White - Gold - Purple. Purple is the strongest. Red is the weakest.

However, suppose you have two cultivators on the same level. The only difference between them is that one uses Red lightning while the other one uses Blue lightning. If you tell them to throw their strongest lightning technique at some unfortunate village or city, the damage caused by their techniques will be roughly the same.

Why? Because their cultivation level is the same, so they’re roughly working with the same raw power.

However! If they throw their techniques at each other, the one with a higher level of lightning affinity will always win. Why? Because his lightning is, so to speak, purer.

It’s possible for lower lightning to beat higher lightning if backed by enough raw power, but usually, if you’re in a higher cultivation realm, your element is going to be purer. Protagonist cases like Liu Jin where he’s reached the pinnacle of lightning while still in his teens are the exception.

Now that we have cleared that, where does Purple Lightning fit into this?

Basically, it’s cheating.

Some people got this, but Purple Lightning is an affinity people should usually only reach once they step into the Divine Realms. And even then, it’s not so easy. There are a bunch of little factors that make the barrier of entry very hard. The Storm Dragon is cheating by jump-starting the process on all his descendants as soon as they reach gold.

And it needs to be gold, by the way. They’d die otherwise.

Once the Storm Dragon has used their bodies to show them how it’s done, it becomes possible for members of the royal bloodline to replicate the process. Their bodies remember how to do it. However, they still need to work hard until they master it. Currently, Liu Jin can manifest purple sparks but little else.

Is there anything higher than that? Who knows?

The moral of the story is that you should have a dragon as a grandfather.

AN: I was so busy yesterday that I completely forgot to schedule this post.  That said, it's still Friday, so it's okay.

It did sound like purple lightning itself was a stepping stone, the way the storm dragon described it. Maybe it’s spoilers but it seems the lightning can evolve further

Why would I be reading WN if I have dragon grandpa? I’ll probably sleep all day.😴

I'm actually ok not have a dragon grandpa and also not living in a world where undead giants bleed flesh balls that instantly turn me into a possessed abomination. It's a tradeoff.
