This month's Sketch of the Month winning idea was: What if Mace had a heart-to-heart with Vi and Bobby after V4, but before V5?

Tangling with Tendril didn't leave everyone in tip-top shape for a tea party- with or without painkillers. But given time, wounds can heal up.

Commanding Vote backers, get ready for tomorrow- SKOM is upgrading to the Monthly Vivid Poll, and we'll need your help to guide it!

This feels backhanded

Garrett Simpson

Vi’s eyes and playing with her rockstar hair tuft is hysterical! Oh Mace sweetie,nice try dude

Shannon TJ

I really feel like this scene should've been in V4, I wanna see all the characters interact ;o;

numbdev

Vi didn't take the drugs? Good for her, DARE to resist.

ZephyrLyall

Aaaaaannnnd.... it is painfully obvious this was not what was wanted out of that SKOM suggestion. And it is equally obvious that it was obvious to you, Dave. Awfully convenient that after all that tough guy shit these characters did in V4 that now they are in so much pain and hopped on painkillers that they can't have a conversation. If you don't want to do a SKOM, next time just say it and don't waste a month where another idea could've been handled better. Oh, wait, that doesn't matter anymore--there will be no more SKOMs anyway.

Bowoodstock

Wait, where was the vote? I didn't see a SKOM vote happen in March, and I'm part of the $10 tier

RandomTonio

No wonder Mace wanted out of Troika

Sporefox

Dave, don’t become what you hate in other publishers. This amuses me but the divide can be felt from what vivid once was and the quality DK used to have in its character strength

Shannon TJ

Yeah...I have no idea why this much-needed conversation between Mace and the older orphanage kids hasn't happened in canon yet.

Dreamkeepers

More character interaction is fun! Sometimes I want to indulge more, but the story's gotta do what it does.

Dreamkeepers

I'm happy with how the page came out- I didn't intend to unearth so much bitterness, I guess there were some very specific desires in mind. I just have to write the way I think it would happen. ^ ^;

ZephyrLyall

"With the way V5 is written, that isn't the first time that Mace and Vi had an reunion. This is happening after Mace's been in the base for a few days and he's already has had his talk with Vi between V4 and V5. A scene were they both share each others feelings once they finally meet each other again isn't necessary because there are a lot of times were you could understand where the characters are coming from and you know that scene already happened, and there's no need to just go over it blow by blow because nothing important is occurring. " ^ Ah, so when you were saying Mace "already has had his talk with Vi" you meant *this*? And this is totally not a sarcastic response to people asking for said reunion as a SKOM because you said that such scenes are "nothing important" and you won't be including them in the GNS.

Dreamkeepers

Precisely. Mace’s reunion was the opposite of gratifying. Sometimes circumstances prevent people from treating one another with the attention they need, and that can lead to unintended ramifications- such as Mace’s chosen plan of action in the opening of Volume 5. Elaborating on the necessary direction of the story from here wanders into plot vault territory. It’s regrettable that you impute malicious intent behind every narrative reality, and unfortunate if you were under the impression that our writing process is a debate open to argumentative influence. I can’t make any one person happy, but we will do our best to keep the story true to itself no matter what.

Bowoodstock

Ah, I see. Then my next question would be, is there a different poll for Dark Market backers? While I'm not subscribed at the 20 level on here, I did drop for one of the mastermind backer subscriptions on Dark Market, and the poll that's currently showing doesn't have the idea I submitted as an option. I apologize if I'm missing something, I'm just trying to understand how this works.

Dreamkeepers

I remember your idea- it was alternate-future Vanth, I loved it! Your idea was included in the earlier poll... Lemme dig it up... Here it is! I was off on the date by a few days: https://www.patreon.com/posts/voting-time-of-25117233 I dropped an e-mail before the MVP Poll to see if you wanted an idea submitted for the recent voting- it looks like we missed signals this time around, sorry about that. I'll sketch up something quick for you to make up for it, reply in e-mail with your address and we'll mail you something soon. 8 )

Bowoodstock

Thank you, that's very kind of you. For some reason I couldn't see that March 3 poll back when it was posted; I'm not entirely sure it was visible to everyone at the 10 level. I'll send the address in an email later; for future reference, since it seems that in the history of polls people are resubmitting ideas, I would like to keep the idea with Vanth alive, one can hope it might actually happen at some point. She's one of the best characters you've created.

Lord Kiyo

I was kinda wondering where this kind of thing was in the story. because it had to have happened. I mean maybe not exactly like this, but he had to have talked to them.

DNMZ

Ok I'm a patreon again, and this is not how I wanted to start it but I'm not gonna put up a fake smile. I have to say that personally I find this slightly disappointing and a bit frustrating. Sorry Dave, I'm really not trying to be a troll. I mean Mace went to talk to Vi and Bobby right after the mission and it didn't end so well due to their injuries. Ok that's understandable, but that can't be the only time he tried to talk to them before V5 can it ? I really hope this SKOM wasn't made out of spite.

2021-12-24 16:45:39 I was randomly thinking about this again, as I am prone to overthinking, and I believe I can verbalize the reaction to this SKOM much more better-er now. Putting on my Lisa Cron cap here, the main issue at hand is the amount of setup you've done, compared to the payoff. Prelude is actually your downfall with respect to this matter - as readers, we have spent so much time with Vi and Bobby and seeing them interact with Mace & co. as children that we feel cheated that any "long-awaited reunion" between them (and this refers to both the real-life and in-universe passage of time) should transpire like this. It's the same feeling I get from the orphanage characters - they were only supposed to show up in Volume 1 and never again, right? Before you revamped the story, the readers weren't supposed to care about them, and why should we? They were only designed to be background characters, they didn't have any standout lines or moments. But, because of Prelude, they now have names, personalities, backstories...it ends up making them feel way, way more important than they perhaps actually are. Soo, that's my long-winded two cents! I'm sorry if this comes across as mean, I just like to untangle and understand things for myself.
