A very early Mace and Whip, pre 2005.  Mace is missing a tail.

Mace is missing a tail and Whip is either missing an ear or is missing both ears and has a dorsal fin.

So what would be your very first drawing of Mace? or do you even have it anymore, or remember what it was?

Matthew Dieck

Listen, I love this series, always will. The current characters are beautiful and expressive and just all look so huggable (except Grunn). I thank the fates that it went through all it's stages of development to be where it is... ... ...that said Thank - the Lord - that these were as rejected a Don Hertzvelt cartoon.

Mace’s Eyes look alien for some reason.

This early art should give everyone hope. You don't have to start good to get good. ^ ^;

It would have to be scanned, we don't have the physical papers anymore. It's possible this is it, or at least in the running for earliest concept art.

sucks not having all the sketches. But sometimes when you look back the response is, "My god! did I really draw that bad? I am so embarrassed." I still have my original fanfics that were written by hand around 1990. I am far too embarrassed to show that book due to how bad the story and art is. But I did show a few scans so my watchers can see that good art first comes from... crud to put it lightly. :D

Dave where did the idea for Mace to have black eyes come from

Dreamkeepers

Actually, Whip sometimes sticks his ears together to make a shark fin for easy flying. But that doesn't explain Mace's obvious defiance of gravity. No tail, no standing, eh?

Dreamkeepers

The black eyes were a beginning concept design, but during character turnarounds, realized that we had no way to tell which way Mace was looking. This was going to be extremely difficult in animation (back when it was a tv show pitch) so the eyes were changed for a more classic look.
