We've been trying to coming up with a special gem that represents Blind/Darkness status effect in an RPG game for a while, but finally, thanks to Kurono, I think we came up with something that is suitable for a puzzle game!

The "Darkness" gem is a timer gem that activates its effect at the beginning of each of the affected character's action. Each time it activates, the screen is covered randomly by darkness, leaving only one area visible.

Any effect that affects random gems will work normally and can still affect gems that are covered by the darkness. However, for any action that requires you to select gems, you can only select visible gems as your targets.

Darkness Gem Demonstration

A demonstration of how darkness gem works. At the beginning of each action, the screen is randomly covered with darkness, leaving only a small area of visible gems. Any gems that are inside the darkness cannot be selected for a swap or targeted of a spell.

Good idea, I think it suits the effect nicely!

Cool effect! But is it possible for the darkness to cover all the available moves on the board? For example, what if there are only 2 available moves on the board, which are both located at the top of the screen, and the darkness just happens to cover that part of the screen? Does this force the player to skip a turn?

Thank you! As for your question, the darkness is programmed in a way that there must be at least one possible move in the visible area. So in your example, that area will be visible and not covered by the darkness. - Punipen

Nice mechanics ! Although I think the effect might look slightly better was it more shadowy/black cloudy on the covered gems instead of plain, clean-cut black. Right now, it kinda looks like the playable grid just doesn't fit the center window and so all the unused space is just black by default (similar to when you use an image that's too small as your wallpaper and don't resize it for instance), especially when the visible section is in the top left corner. x) But other than that, god does hearing this battle music make me want to play the game again. I can't wait for the next chapter ! Keep up the good work ! o/

I was actually concerned about the black square too, so thank you for mentioning that XD I'll try to cover it with an animated sprite that makes it looks like a smokescreen or something instead. It should look better than the current blah black squares.
