A hikikomori is a japanese word (I specified that because we don't have a translation for it, just the description) for someone who had a shitty experience, maybe was bullied by the entire school, or you lost your job and was too ashamed to face people. It's basically a term for someone that's been traumatized by society and refuses to leave their house.

Just a correction. Normal Japanese do use hikikomotte iru (verb form of hikikomori) during normal convos. It just means a shut-in nowadays.
