Ah yes perfect for me to watch 1 in the morning let's goo

Khansama

I know there's talk of lows and highs in this anime, but I personally feel this Catherine episode is the lowest. I think the whole point of the episode was that graveyard scene. But that's it, there's still a couple slow episodes but this episode is the slowest

funkymonk

Gintama truly is one of the best anime out there. The problem though is the first 40 or so episodes is basically world building and character introductions. their are so many characters and they all have stories that intertwine so it takes a lot of episodes to get everyone introduced and their relationships with eachother shown. but after that this show legit just gets better and better. Some of the best action sequences you will see in anime, heartfelt tearjerking scenes and of course the comedy gold. I hope you guys don;t drop it at some point because like I said it just gets better and better always.

lol if you look at the references to Shinsengumi and Japanese government surrendering, it's actually clear this story is a parody on real history. It's not that the Americans invaded, but rather they forced Japan to open their borders in the 1800s. Basically, a bunch of samurais resisted and got executed because of that. It was what led to Japan developing a crazy strong army eventually, but there was also a lot of resentment.

Ah yes peak fiction, ik people like to say the beginning is slow when that's not really the right term, Gintama's a comedy anime, but when the serious arcs start, it truly sets itself apart from most anime. Also the first serious arc is called the Benizakura arc which is episodes 58-61 and it was actually remastered into a movie, so I highly recommend watching the movie instead cuz of course the animation is way better, looking forward to these next 350 episodes and a couple movies XD

Katsura (Gintoki's terrorist buddy) was also a historical figure who was instrumental in taking down the government at the time. He kinda failed at the start, but started a wave of revolts that resulted in the overthrowing of the bakufu. The guy took important positions in the new government historically and was even responsible for educating the emperor.

So while I understand Americans would scoff at the idea that they're depicted as villains, the author did try his best to make the references comedic lol. I can see that at least Sherm appreciates that fact.

Damiester

Not gonna lie, after HxH, Gintama is what keeps me subbed to this channel at the ceiling tier lol.

reanimated

Hell yeah bro! And word thanks! Please just remind me as we get closer because I will forget lmfao

reanimated

Okay fire! Do you study Japanese history or are you Japanese yourself? You got a lot of knowledge on the subject so I'm just curious.

Damiester

Nah, they're just famous figures that appear in many Japanese stories. It's on the level of Three Kingdoms from China or Arthur from the UK.

Alex cleveland

So is all 4 of yall watching Gintama? I havent had time to watch the reaction yet

reanimated

Okay fire. Yeah I know a lot about the three kingdoms because I was really big into dynasty warriors growing up lmao.

This link will help to give you a context on which historical figures the main characters are based on. Whenever you interested in a character's origin, just look up this link : https://archeromega.blogspot.com/2012/06/gintama-anime-historical-influences.html Btw, snack bar is not a shop where they sell snacks lol. It is similar to Japanese hostess bar and catered towards old men mostly, where the old lady staff are paid to serve and flirt with male customers(mostly old men). That's why Snack bar owner Otose said she works at night usually. You can see a lot of these snack bars in Japan mostly in the alleyways. Wiki info : Although they do not charge an entry fee (and often have no set prices on their menus), they usually either have an arbitrary charge or charge a set hourly fee plus a "bottle charge". (Customers purchase a bottle in their own name, and it is kept for future visits.)

Also ,going forward(episode 15+ probably), you will see a lot of references explained at the top with yellow text. So, I'd suggest you to pause and read them(after you are done with the reaction maybe) to understand the puns, meanings and other stuff :)
