Phew! Talk about a lot to unpack this episode. Although I'm not the biggest fan of Rika, I'm glad she overcame her issues.

Rika became a better character for me after this ep

Whew, this episode was heavy.

I just love how incredibly realistic the issues these girls have to overcome are. Rika's always been purposely abrasive and there's been hints as to why, but finally getting to see it fully explained was really satisfying. Being overly confident and overly cheerful is often a cover for some truly deep sadness. I'm really glad to see this show taking these issues seriously and showing them in such a genuine light. We've seen so many reasons for suffering, with both our main girls and the girls they're saving, yet the show has portrayed none of it in a negative light. The show doesn't judge its own characters and displays just how easy it is for anyone to fall into despair.

A slight little follow up to that, this is absolutely the first time I’ve seen such an accurate portrayal of cutting in anime. You see a lot of self harm and depression in other forms throughout anime, but I can’t think of any other series that has addressed the topic and shown the scars. For Rika the scars are a core part of her character and the show doesn’t shy away from it. It makes me really happy to see the topic be handled with such care and sincerity.

Easily my favorite episode so far, Rika definitely grew on me a lot this episode And the osts in this episode were absolutely perfect, the background music playing from around 18:00-20:00 in was eerie and bone chilling af and completely elevated that scene, and the ost around 22:15 was straight HEAT!!!!!!! Man I love this fucking show! 😂

When we first saw Rika's scars/cuts in her debut episode, I couldn't help but not dislike her because I figured there was more to her character then what was apparent. Her character is an overall reflection of people who suffer from despair due to their relationship with their parent/s (in this case, Rika's mom). There's also the fact that she wants to meet her father to get the proper closure she was never able to get or remember. This episode seemed like the starting point for Rika, and I feel as if she'll be able to help her mother get out of her unhealthy habits (getting drunk everyday, smoking lots of cigarettes) by the end of the series, or at least I hope. I really loved this episode tbh and I'm looking forward to the next one!
