I do always love how Makoto Shinkai just throws a music video into pretty much all his movies. I guess when you've great such amazing animation you might as well flex a little. Any movie by him tends to pretty damn good though.

2021-11-28 21:04:03 The similarity to Wolf Children is the Coming of Age aspect of each film. 5cmPerSec. is filled with subliminal messages that I really appreciate, and I really loved the realistic feel of this movie without having to rely on some fantasy gimmick. You guys have plowed through a good chunk of popular Comix Wave & Makoto Shinkai films, so hopefully we can get "The Garden of Words" and "Flavors of Youth" on the movie nights as well.

Having watched 5 Cm to see what Makoto Shinkai was known shortly before watching Your Name, you know I was getting flashbacks to 5 Cm's 3rd act train tracks scene as I watched Taki and Mitsuha passed each other on the bridge and again on the stairs...and I'm so glad that had an opposite, more happy ending. But yeah, 5 Cm definitely hit hard for me, especially that third act seeing how Takaki ended up so unhappy as an adult. Messy apartment, unsatisfied career, and a relationship with another girl that wasn't going anywhere. It was kind of a wake-up call for me in my sophomore year in college, tryna get romance but failing, and focusing on that so much that everything else falls to the side. Definitely got me to confront my own unhealthy mindset that time.
