Yeah isekai just means other world so it can be death and reincarnation or transported/stuck in a game or summoned by mages/a goddess (sometimes a useless one..) It just means that the mc goes to a different world then his own so a anime like Devil is a part-timer is still considered a isekai even thow the devil from his world gets trasported to modern Japan since it's a different world then his own. Sao despite not being the first isekai got really popular and that's where the confusion comes from with isekai and game worlds.

I think the confusion is that it's always a game or a world with game-like mechanics to it that has it tied to "A game anime" but yeah SAO definitely is majorly responsible. Same with Rising of Shield hero and Overlord.
