In the kingdoms of the forested continent known as the Fallows, short-faced pups like Banjo are seen as cursed, hideous things, and he, like many of these so-called "hoglings," was abandoned in the woods to die.

Luckily, the woods are also full of societal outcasts, like the family of foxes who took him in and taught him how to deal with a world that distrusted him.
