Like I totally get where you guys are coming from. I do. But as a result of other racist events throughout our lives, we do come to those conclusions. Whether you think it's right or wrong. Whether I think it's right or wrong. We don't have evidence that he intentionally cropped her out because she's African, but we also don't have evidence that he didn't. We'll probably never know, but I'm not gonna get upset with people for being angry about it because I get where they are coming from. If this was the ONLY picture she took with them, whether compositional or not, then that's pretty fucked up to remove her. If you're actively fighting for something then you want people to know who you are.

I'm not saying someone should be stoned for cropping the picture. But it is good to bring awareness to it. There will always be an excuse to crop out a black person. Why couldn't the girl on the very right be cropped out, to get the same zoomed in effect? The fact that the photo editor did not immediately acknowledge that this black woman has the same importance as the others to be kept in the picture *could be* evidence of racial bias. As black people, we are done with the bias not being in our favor, because it seems like it never is, unless it's in the arts or sports (if that). "Small" or "subtle" instances like this should, indeed, be checked.

Composition-wise, she looks out of place. I think the cropped picture looks better overall. I say this based on the way their heads are turned. Her position is a little too far from the girl she’s next to and the angle that her head is turned kinda breaks the photo. If I were to crop someone out to make the picture look better overall, it would’ve been her. The building being a distraction is kinda bullshit. You have to stare really hard, but I know people who edit photos and they are pretty anal about certain things so 🤷🏾‍♂️.

My theory is that since they have the professional doctor David here they don’t want to be fucking around as much as they sometimes do before the article even starts. They’re probably trying to get as much screen time of him as they can since he’s interesting and knowledgeable about medical aspects of things.

Claiming that there there may have been racist and discriminatory intent behind cropping Vanessa from the ap photo is not an outrageous claim like Steve was making it out to be. Pointing out that someone got cropped out from the photo for no real reason isn't a "throw-away" reason to make that claim either. His take was just very dismissive to me. As Geo said if there was a legitimate reason as to why she was cropped out then I would understand saying the claim is outrageous but the point of the article was to reference a group of young activists coming together etc, so why would you exclude one of them from the main photo being posted on the article. Even if there wasn't intentional ill intent of cropping her out it is so easy for many to dismiss black and African voices, like so so easy, call me OfFeNdEd but Steve completely proved my point here. Racism doesn't have to be someone shouting "you nigger booty scratching African bitch" at people for it to be real

You guys make valid points here, however this is not an “extraordinary claim” so it shouldn’t require extraordinary amounts of evidence. This kind of stuff happens all the time and while it may be out of the ordinary for your lives, none of you are black so what are the odds you would experience anti blackness? Plus the fact that this could “accidentally” happen is a problem...how can you accidentally crop out a whole person unless that person is unimportant to you?

I kind of agree with all sides, though in my opinion the extraordinary evidence that I think Steve is referring too could be as simple as this AP journalist having a previous photo or article wherein they exhibit racist tendencies - I think what Steve says at the end is very true though, unless you know how these people see things through their own eyes we can't judge their intent on just the ONE instance as is being done in this case

One thing I thought of was if you're going to include 5 women in a photo, position them from the start in a way that looks appealing. It's less suspect if the photographer grabbed a few random women and was like, "You, you, and you. Right here, smile! K, thanks." vs. deliberately pulling each of the five for a very specific photo and not from the start, lining them up in a way that's going to look appealing for all 5 in the final edit.

I had a problem with the guts guys reiterating Steve's point to Tiff after she says her opinion. Like shes smarter than people take her for and more insightful. Her and Geo were the only ones who got. The guys, ESPECIALLY Steve, are so against cancel culture it doesn't help them actually see the other sides reasoning/ empathize.

If Greta and Vanessa had switched spots, I can guarantee Greta would not have been cropped out due to composition. When your argument for excluding an individual from a photo is due to composition, you are implicitly acknowledging that the individual is of lesser value than the overall picture.

Interesting how Steve just got the majority on his side... these claims are, unfortunately, not exaggerated. Do you know how amazing photoshop is these days? They could have easily photoshopped this apparently eye sore building out of the pic if they really wanted to.

As someone who is experienced in photography, if she wasn’t the subject of the photo she could be cropped out for any reason. However, the fact that she is a part of that subject photographers have other ways of making a building not an eye sore. 1.) cropping the photo close to her even if it cuts off a sliver of hair or lines up with her arm it will diminish the problem of the building. 2.) blur the background so it isn’t focused. The photo should have been blurred for editing regardless because they are an important subject and you want all the focus on them. 3.) digitally remove the fucking building or remove whatever is so distracting about the building. It’s hard but it can be done especially with professionals. It was bullshit to crop her out

To be honest I don’t know what backlash Steve has been getting but it seems as though he has been putting himself in the situation a lot lately as though he’s defending himself and not seeing the bigger picture. I would understand compositional wise if they were trying to get something in the background or a specific object but in order to do so they had to crop her. But the whole purpose of the picture was to get a picture of all of them, and I doubt they had just enough time to take one with not adjustments. Like you guys said the short girl in the middle throws the whole picture off so in my opinion with that and not being able to include everyone in the picture should have been reason enough to throw the whole picture away and use a different one.

I completely 100% agree with this, the building could have been cropped easily, I could edit that building out on acetone in 10 minutes. I understand what Steve is saying because it does suck when accusations like this are thrown. But there's a time where you need to step back and think "That WAS a shitty reason, and they never reached out to her."
