Sales tax & Patreon (Patreon)

Hi everyone,

Quick update regarding sales tax on Patreon. I was recently notified that due to laws passing in several countries, Patreon is required to start charging a sales tax on some pledges starting on July 1st.

The amount in general should be relatively small, but I wanted to make sure everyone is aware. For example sales tax rates in the US range from 4% to 11%, so on a $5 pledge, that would be between 20 cents and 55 cents. 

Whether you will be charged a sales tax depends on your location and what your government considers taxable. The extra money does not go to me or to Patreon but gets paid directly to local governments.

On my end I have done what I can do to explain clearly what the different perks of the different pledges are. This should mean that part of every pledge is considered a donation and in most instances should therefore not be (completely) taxable. 

If you’re in a location where sales tax will be required, you should expect to receive an email from Patreon with more information about this , but I wanted to make sure you were aware of these changes way ahead of July 1st when they go into effect.
