On renaming the military bases-having lived near Fort Bragg at the time of renaming (and my husband spending a LOT of time stationed there) a lot of the soldiers felt like there was a missed opportunity in the renaming to Fort Liberty. The number of war heroes that comes from Bragg/Liberty that could have been honored by renaming the fort to them was a bit disappointing. The 82nd airborne division is one of the most frequently deployed units, nicknamed “all American” (because it was made up of soldiers from all 48 states), their participation in the largest amphibian invasion in military history (D-Day). Like there wasn’t a single person in WWII that could have been honored in the rename? Overall I think you see a lot of resistance to renaming stuff like that-but a good chunk of that resistance came from the folks that are on board with renaming but really feel it should be named something that honors a better person, rather than actually caring about it specifically being named Fort Bragg (although unfortunately there are people who would want it to stay the same).
