Great recap and overview of the origins Berto! Deep breath—this is a tough subject but I’m grateful you guys are tackling it.

I really appreciate your honesty about what you didn’t know prior to doing this series. I have been putting off listening to this series because, like you said, I’m truly terrified to listen to it. Not only for the information, but how you frame this whole conversation and the uncertainty of whether or not you’ll discuss it with the nuance it requires and appreciate the deep complexity of systemic oppression . (I say that because there are entire academic disciplines dedicated to this subject, so it seems daunting to tackle. I applaud you doing this for a lay audience who don’t have the opportunity to attend classes in Black Studies, Ethnic Studies, Indigenous Studies, etc. where these topics are fundamental to the field.) I do have this feedback as someone who does have an extensive academic background in gender, sexuality, indigenous and ethnic studies, if you truly thought the election of Obama marked the potential end of racism, I beg you, please please please do a deep dive on NEOLIBERALISM. Even if just for yourselves, it would go a significantly long way to adding much more nuance to your perspective of the state of politics in the U.S.. I often hear you conflate “liberal” politics with progressive politics and those are not the same thing, but is indicative of the dominant neoliberal discourse most democrats buy in to with the best of intentions. Without an understanding of neoliberalism, I worry about how folks may be unintentionally harming marginalized groups while believing they are acting as an ally.
