Killers of the Flower Moon was objectively a good movie—expertly shot, paced, written, and acted. But I still hated it. Here’s why. I wanted it to center more from Mollie and the Osage people. The fear, anger, desperation and paranoia of these people can be depicted more but it was not. It was all about the greed of Ernest Burkhardt and King Hale. The entire story was told from the perspective of the white men, and very little weight was given to Mollie’s internal emotional experience. When she found out [the ending], why was her emotional journey absent? Why couldn’t 15 mins be dedicated to her? You could show a parallel Mollie storyline along with Ernest as the truth comes out. That’s where the story failed in a major way. And I don’t think it would have been stereotypical or take away from the power of the film. In fact, it would have humanized the victim. Not telling that aspect of this story felt like another act of victimization. It’s like, trauma happens to marginalized people, and we’ll show the symptoms of it (depression, alcoholism) but not how the trauma impacts victims when it happens. And that’s why the film—for me—was not good.
