The question posed at the end is difficult. On one hand, I fully believe that it is bad to financially support people who do terrible things. Unfortunately, A LOT of famous people have done terrible things and if you go out of your way to avoid consuming media that is created by them there isn’t much left. Elvis, John Lennon, Jimmy Paige, Iggy Pop are all iconic musicians who have abused others in one way or another. It’s really tough and I don’t know if there is a right or wrong answer.

So I will say that MJ’s music was a huge part of my childhood as well, and it’s a big loss not to listen anymore but anytime it comes on, all I can think about is what he did, specific imagery comes up even though I watched the documentary once years ago. I used to be very offended when others made the personal choice to still play his music but now I have a bit more of a nuanced view that we all have different thresholds. One thing that’s bothered me for a while that I couldn’t quite put to words till now is this: The “OPP” jingle that Berto sings is clearly from the “ABC” Jackson 5 song. Does that have to be sung so often? Could possibly a different song be applied instead by an artist not so…. Likely pedophilic? I hope this is received with the kindness I’m trying to show via text. Love your work, and maybe I’m the only one bothered by this but I figured I’d let y’all know in case it makes a difference or at least creates awareness. 💚
