Finally got my hands on the book and wow, what a powerful read! In one of the late chapters when Jenette talks about her experience going to therapy for the first time, she writes about how she terminated her first therapist after seemingly having a breakthrough conversation about her mother being abusive, which sounds a lot like what you've spoken about with clients suddenly terminating. She talked about how her entire identity at that time was built around her mother, and questioning that foundation would have meant destroying that identity, so she quit therapy rather than go through that painful process. It definitely makes me wonder about how often people know what their problems are but make the choice to avoid addressing them, because they either don't know how to change or are afraid the process of changing will be too difficult and painful.
