I think growing up with rigid family members who lack empathy can impact people in so many ways. I do not think those who do not grow up with it can truly understand but I think they can try to. Just like I cannot understand having an addict for a parent because I didn't have that, but I can try to empathize. Yet I cannot fully understand what it is to have an addict for a parent. It can cause a PTSD type reaction triggering fear of having one's well being negatively impacted in areas of emotions, finances, health, etc. Then everything ultimately gets blamed on you anyways no matter how hard one tries to resolve or problem solve the situation. Rigid even oppositional just for oppositional sake type families can be completely overwhelming. I think Family Systems is a way of conceptualizing behavior patterns in these types of families that otherwise just make no sense to an outsider. But I do think people who come from such families still have a hard time finding the support and understanding they truly need to heal.
