I'm horrified because I didn't no there are no laws in every state that a therapist has to warn the police and the potential victims. I thought there had to be laws because it's just common sense. What is wrong with our country?

Yes, originally, therapy was considered completely confidential, so it takes a lot to change that. Confidentiality benefits the client and society, for the most part, because it allows clients the space to talk about whatever they want.
