I was a child of the 80s and I got my d’s and b’s confused while learning to write. I still love reading (I’m a slow but steadfast reader). I am also a librarian and I read articles closely for a living. I did not do well in math but I loved biology, art and literature. I think we are all proof that we are more than our grades at school! Well done for such a heartwarming episode that proves that really smart people like yourselves might not have always been perfect students (despite saying incisive things!). 💚

My mom is Russian and Central Asian. She was very tough when it came to my grades. I was entirely stressed out in High School. I had mostly AP courses (not math though lol) and I was at a Performing Arts school. I loved the school and did have a lot of fun in High School. I graduated a year early, but I just remember feeling pressured constantly and when it was over I just felt relieved. And then it was about to start all over again- the pressure of college. At 16, I went to go visit family in Russia before it started all over again, but did the shocking unthinkable thing and made my mother freak out. I eloped and immediately got pregnant with my first child. My mom always tried to say that I ruined my life, but I felt like I saved my life. I really embraced motherhood. I eventually went to college- after my second baby. And on my own terms. Some people imagine that I did not get to have fun and be kid (in HS or as a college student), but they do not understand that if I went to college right then- I would have not had fun anyway and I would have been extremely stressed out. I feel like everything happens for a reason and it was not my time. I needed a break from books and constant stress of making the perfect GPA. And when I first started back up at college I took Music as my major- after which I changed majors many times. I forgot to mention that I have ADHD which made the pressure worse for me I am sure.
